Mont Choungui in Mayotte

An unmissable hike in Mayotte! An incredible view of the south of the island and more if the weather is favourable! Go for it without hesitation; the effort will be well rewarded on arrival.
Be warned, however, that some may find this hike challenging: there are very steep sections both on the ascent and the descent.

Description of the walk

The start is at the Mont Choungui car park in the commune of Kani-Kéli. You’ll find a small eatery there, and the path is behind it.

(S/E) Follow a quiet path through the jungle for about 800 m to a faré (a simple shelter made of plant materials): the police secure this section (see § Practical Information).

(1) Take the path on the left. For nearly 600 m, the path climbs increasingly steeply to the summit. At first, the path remains easy, then it gets tougher and tougher, becoming quite vertical, alternating between rocks and tree roots. Sometimes you have to pull yourself up using your arms. Be careful to avoid slipping and tripping over a root.

(2) The summit offers a splendid view! Follow the same path back down , taking care on the very steep descent. Return to the car park (S/E).
