Meschers-sur-Gironde, estuary and hillsides

A lovely circular cycle route offering beautiful views of the estuary and a chance to explore the nearby countryside, with its hillsides and marshes. Whilst you’re there, stop off at Talmont to visit one of the most beautiful villages in France. The route is well signposted, the roads are very quiet and there are significant stretches of cycle path. Follow the cycle path signposted ‘des deux mers’, then cycle path 5, then cycle path 4.

Description of the route

Start from Meschers harbour, Impasse des Carrelets. Park in the car park opposite Meschers Service Marine.

(S/E) Walk to the end of the cul-de-sac and take the path that starts just past the boules court. Follow the coast to a small headland called Port Marans, where there are numerous fishing huts.

(1) Turn right onto a short stretch of road, then look out for the ‘Piste des Deux Mers’ signpost on your right. Follow the coast to the pedestrian access area leading to Talmont.

(2) Continue to the left, pass over the lock at the small harbour and join route no. 15 at the hamlet of Le Caillaud.

(3) Follow the cycle path to the right, climb up towards the cliff and walk along it on a stony track. Head back down and follow the coast again until you reach the signpost for route no. 5, a few metres past the viewing platform overlooking the Barzan Plage estuary.

(4) Turn left, cross the road and continue straight ahead along Chemin de Chandorat. At the end, turn right onto Route Romane, then left onto Route du Fâ, and follow the road uphill to the archaeological site at Le Fâ.

(5) Carry on and, at the crossroads, turn right then immediately left (markers for Trail No. 5) and head straight on to the four-way junction at the hamlet of Fontboire.

(6) Turn left onto Route d’Arces and head for Arces Town Hall.

(7) Turn right onto the D244, towards Épargnes, leave the village and then turn left onto a small road. Follow it straight on to the four-way junction at the end of Rue des Richards.

(8) Turn left, leaving track no. 5 to take track no. 4, Rue des Trois Moulins. Cross the Route de Talmont and then the housing estate to reach the Route de Conteneuil.

(9) Turn left, leave Cozes and follow theD244E2 until you come to Rue des Pensées on your right, in the hamlet of Conteneuil.

(10) Take this road, then continue along the cycle path; at the four-way junction, turn right. Join a road and, at the next junction, turn left, then reach the end of Chemin de Fontorbe in the village of Fontenille.

(11) Keep to the right onto Route de la Reine and follow it until you reach a crossroad. Turn right, cross the bridge over the Reine and immediately turn left towards Le Bot. You’ll soon reach a three-way junction.

(12) Keep left and follow the path, which alternates with formerly tarmac-surfaced roads, staying on trail no. 4. At the hamlet of Beauregard, turn left and reach the end of the Route du Champ Blanc at Grand Benoire.

(13) Turn left onto Route de Beloire and follow this small road to the end.

(14) Turn right onto the D145, then quickly turn left off it onto Route de Talmont, heading towards Meschers Centre, and head for the Place de l’Église and its church.

(15) Drive past it, then follow Avenue du Port. At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Rue des Goélands, then keep right at the following junctions to reach the harbour (S/E).
