Manor of Lestremec and Etang du Moulin Neuf

After walking along woodland paths to admire the manor "Manoir de Lestremec", we skirt the pond "Etang du Moulin Neuf".
A short detour to enjoy the peace and quiet of the chapel "Chapelle de Kelou Mad" before returning along the greenway.

The Pont-L'Abbé water tower as a landmark.

Description of the walk

"Maison du pays bigouden", at the roundabout at the entrance of Pont-l'Abbé, when you come from Quimper.

VTT3 and Yellow markings.

(S/E) From the car park, use the pedestrian crossing to bypass the traffic circle and head towards the west ring road (D785). Be careful, walk carefully on the grassy strip.

(1) Turn right onto the first path (2 letterboxes). Follow this path through a pine woodland. Pass a small rustic wash-house on your left and continue until you meet the old "Transbigouden" GR®34H railroad line.

(2) Turn right on this greenway (signposted Quimper 17km) for a few hundred metres, then at the signpost "Circuit de l'étang du Moulin Neuf", leave it to turn left and take the parallel path which goes back behind a house. Follow the Yellow markings. The path skirts a vast meadow on the right, then turns left to reach a road.

Off road

Turn right and follow this small road. Ignore two roads leading to farms on your left. Pass a rustic cross on your right. At the next crossroads, continue straight on towards "Plonéour-Lanvern", leaving behind the signposted route to Tréméoc town.

(3) Turn left then right to reach the entrance to the manor "Manoir de Lestrémec". This manor is privately owned, but if the owners are around, they'll be happy to show you around.
Retrace your steps, cross the small wooded area and join the yellow-marked path again close to the road.

Yellow Marking

Follow it to the right to reach the windmill "Moulin Neuf lake". Cross a small parking area, then turn left to walk along the water's edge towards the dam.

(4) When you see the dam, leave the edge of the pond and turn left to reach a staircase. Climb up, leaving the path on the left, and continue on to a footbridge that leads around the dam.
Follow the pathway, which is currently being restored to its natural course (October 2020).

Unmarked

(5) At the end of this footbridge, turn left, leaving on your right the signposted path that continues around the pond. Follow a path that skirts the swampy area you've crossed. Opposite a meadow, turn right up a sunken track which leads to a road at a place called Coatellen.
Turn left to enjoy the bucolic setting of the chapel "Chapelle Notre Dame de Bonne Nouvelle" (Kelou Mad in Breton dialect).

(6) Go back to the road. Take the first street on the left that goes around the Ty Coat housing estate, and continue along this road back to the one you left.
Turn left to go over the bypass and take the first path on the left, which goes behind some houses and joins the road "Route Saint-Julien". Follow this road down to a small roundabout.

Yellow Marking

(7) Turn left to take the green path, which runs alongside the stream coming from the dam. Continue until you reach a marker at a staircase.

(8) Go up and turn right. Continue along this path, which runs below the Pont-L'Abbé water tower. Look out for an old wash-house and fountain on your right. This leads to the street "Rue Ster Vad", which you follow until you reach the street "Rue Pen Enez".

(9) Turn right, then left into the street "Rue de Menez", which goes uphill. The street continues along a wide tree-lined path. Ignore the pedestrian and bicycle access to the water park on your right. Continue along a property on your right.
Exit onto the D785 road opposite (1). Turn right to reach the car park. Be careful when driving along this road.(S/E)

Practical information

Most of the route is on footpaths or quiet country roads.
A busier section at the end: road Saint-Julien.

In fine weather, the area around the pond is busy, but quiet.

Hello, I'd like my comments to be constructive, the dog is one aspect, children are another and even more (!), I'm not basing myself on previous opinions, which of course I consult first, I'm basing myself on the itinerary I've followed, among other things as a professional hiker for over 20 years and in my profession as a qualified mountain leader (active), I claim to have an objective assessment based on safety when itinerating! A route should be designed for as many people as possible, or else it should contain restrictive details. Yours sincerely, Alain

Hello,

I find your comment excessive and inconsistent with all the previous reviews.
You didn't go to the manor house, which was a very interesting point (see previous reviews).
I have nothing to do with the work that has changed the bucolic aspect of this place.

Small detail: I don't walk with a dog and I don't take this aspect into account.
Best regards.

Hello,
I wouldn't recommend this tour to families with children or dogs, and quite simply I wouldn't recommend this tour to anyone. Dangerous and lacking in interest. At the start, the car park is convenient, although the exit afterwards is tricky depending on the time of day... The building here is disused. At the first pedestrian crossing, it is best to continue straight ahead into the hotel zone and take the first path on the left that runs alongside a hotel, then turn right to join the route with a pretty path through the woods. Then, on the route du manoir, there are some very narrow verges, and although there are few cars, they drive fast and the distance on the road is too long (why not change the route by heading east?). We left the road at point 35 on the map, and took a path to the left, without going to the manor house. We arrived at the dam reservoir, where work began in February 2023 for a 15-month period, and the work seemed to be coming to an end as we passed by. Yes, for the 2 points of interest, a nice little chapel and probably the manor house, but then from the bridge over the main road and all the way along Route Saint-Julien, no pavements or "safe" verges, really very dangerous. Too much tarmac and too many passages through housing estates. The final stretch can be made along a small path on the right at the last little track you come across to avoid going along the main road again. This route either needs to be fundamentally modified or deleted, thank you in advance as the author has the skills to do so. And happy hiking with Visorando!

I only walked the circuit around the Moulin Neuf lake: a very pleasant walk of around 7 km, in the greenery, on flat ground, so suitable for all ages, with the whole family, with the great pleasure of observing a host of birds on the lake: coots, swans, ducks, white and grey herons... No road noise, just the serenity of the place.
New developments are under way, with wooden footbridges that will further enhance the setting and the pleasure of walking there.

A lot of backtracking and visits to housing estates, and the start of the route along the ring road was discouraging enough... Nice, but nothing more.

A beautiful walk. The first part takes us along paths and small roads in a traditional Bigoudenie setting. A visit to the manor house is a real treat. The final, more urbanised section is an opportunity to discover some little-known parts of Pont-L'Abbé.

We had the pleasure of talking to the owners of the Manoir de Lestremec, who are charming and courageous people. We visited the fully restored chapel and consulted the documents available to us to see the work that had been done.
The rest of the walk took us along the greenway and through the forest, which was very pleasant.

We really enjoyed this walk!
We cut off after point 2 and followed the "circuit de l'étang du moulin neuf" signs (the sign is there) to get to point 5 more quickly (no time).
The walk follows streams and meadows, with very few roads, and the routes are very varied.
A must-do in any season.
Thank you

The signpost after point 2 "Circuit de l'étang du Moulin Neuf" on the green route is missing.
A very pleasant and friendly route.
We didn't visit the manor house, but spoke to the owner who told us about its history.
It's a shame that the little Kelou Mad chapel is closed, but it's a great place for a picnic!

Hello LMC,

Thank you for your comment.
For this hike, I didn't suggest the tour of the pond because I posted another hike that does it.
It is of course possible to combine the two.

I also have a hike centred on Pont-L'Abbé.
I wish you all the best on Visorando
