Manifold Valley loop - Wetton

Start : Car park in Wetton at the junction between Well end Lane and Carr Lane. Grid ref. SK 108 550

(S/E) Start off at the car park, turn left (North-West) along Well end Lane following Thor's cave and Wetton Mill signpost. After 340 m or so, just past the road junction, find a track on your left and follow the signs to Thor's cave (South-East). Follow the track down the hill past Thor's Cave after 870 m.

(1) At the next junction, turn left (West).

(2) Walk across the bridge over River Manifold. At the junction, turn left and follow the path along the riverside until you come to a campsite (after 2 Km).

(3) On the way, go past the car park at Weag's Bridge where you keep straight on as you cross the road with the bridge on your left-hand side and find a wooden waypost on your right.

(4) At the campsite, fork right before the bridge and follow the path for a few miles (4 Km) crossing the river a few times until you reach a sty (Pitching Farm).

(5) At the sty, take a left across the meadows and walk 850 m or so until you reach a small lane.

(6) Turn left (North) and follow it until it brings you to a road (Farwall Lane).

(7) Turn left again (North). This road takes you directly to the farm (Throwley Old Hall) at the bottom of the valley (2 Km).

(8) Fork left (North-East) as if you are going into the farm. Again, follow the path off to the left through the gate at the top of the field then keep going North. After 1.3 Km, this path brings you down to the manifold valley trail again at the waypoint (4) and River Manifold.

(4) Retrace the path back to Thor's cave, once you are back on the trail after the bridge at the waypoint (1), walk directly up (East) instead of following the path to the cave, enjoy the herd of cows, take a right back to the car park. (S/E)

Car park also available a Weag's Bridge (Larkstone Lane, Leek ST13 7TX) and start the walk at the waypoint (3) along River Manifold riverside.
