The route starts from a car park at the end of the old Route de Martigues.
At the “Châteauneuf-Les-Martigues” exit on the A55 motorway, head towards La Mède and turn left immediately at the level crossing, pass a cement works and follow the road to the end.
(S/E) Pass the DFCI barrier towards: Forêt Communale le Canton and start the climb up the pretty Vallon du Saut. Reach the top at a crossroads.
(1) Turn left and follow the track for a good kilometre until you reach a fork. There are some lovely views of the Étang de Berre.
(2) Follow the track to the right. Continue straight on, then go round the quarry, still on the track, keeping to the left. At the bottom of the descent, you’ll reach a fork.
(3) Turn right, a full 180°, onto the lower track. Note that you can follow this track in the cool shade of the trees along a parallel path. Continue like this for a kilometre until you reach another fork, directly beneath a power line.
(4) Take a track that climbs to the left and leads to a three-way junction.
(5) Head up the track on the right. Follow the path beneath the power line for about 200 m, and look out for a path starting on the left
(6) Head down this path, due south, and join a cross-country track.
(7) Turn right and walk through this valley until you reach a fork; head up to the right and arrive on a plateau, at a crossroads just before the section under the power line.
(8) Follow the track downwards for 300 m, continuing from the previous valley.
(9) At a left-hand bend, turn onto a path on the right which leads down into a fairly dense wood. You’ll come to a track opposite a pumping station.
(10) Turn right. Pass a large water reservoir and continue for a further 200 m to a fork in the track.
(11) Follow a clearly visible track on the left for 600 m until you reach the three-way junction.
(12) Turn right and climb for about a kilometre to reach a crossroads.
(13) Follow the track to the left, straight on for 250 m, to reach the original fork.
(1) Head back down the way you came, taking the track on the left through the valley to return to the car park (S/E).
