(S/E) Admire the obelisk erected in tribute to René Goscinny, the creator of Asterix, on the station forecourt. Cross the avenue at the pedestrian crossing and head towards the roundabout on the left. Turn right onto Rue Pierre Sémard, go around the small roundabout on the right and continue straight ahead.
Turn right at the second street, Rue des Chais, to admire the first mural on the route, " Le jardin extraordinaire " (The Extraordinary Garden) by Florence Cestac. At the end of this street, go up Rue de la Grand Font on the right to number 15 bis to discover " New York sur Charente " ( New York on the Charente) by Nicolas de Crécy.
(1) Turn left to go up the adjacent Rue du Tunnel and reach Boulevard de la République - see the wall "Le 1er RIMA ancré dans sa ville"by Fawzi Baghdadli on the gable. Go up the boulevard on the left for 150 metres to reach Rue Guichard on the right.
At the top, go up the stairs and then turn right onto Rue Saint-Roch, where you will find " Blake et Mortimer " by Juillard, based on E.P. Jacobs. At the end, turn left in front of the post office and continue to the wall " Avec le temps " by François Schuiten, which pays tribute to the city's rich history of paper manufacturing. Continue along Rue Raymond Poincaré, preferably on the left-hand pavement, and cross Boulevard de Bury at the roundabout. Follow the boulevard to the left.
(2) Turn right onto Place de Ségou. At the end of this street/square, on the left-hand side, you will find " Chassez le naturel " by François Boucq. Go to the roundabout, turn right and go down Boulevard Duroselle. Continue along Rue de Broquisse, cross the roundabout and continue along Rue Léonce Guimberteau.
(3) At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue de Montmoreau and continue to No. 258 to see Dupa's " Cubitus ".
Cross at the next roundabout and turn right onto Rue de Clérac in Sillac. After the tunnel, take the white path on the right, then turn left to reach 109 bis Rue de Montmoreau, where you will find Roba's " Boule et Bill " mural. Continue to Place du Pont de Vars.
(4) Cross at the pedestrian crossing, climb the stairs and follow Rue Massicault. At the end of the street, climb the stairs to reach Rue Laferrière and the top of the ramparts, turning left then right - view of the valley and the Anguienne viaduct.
At the Conseil Départemental crossroads, continue along Boulevard du Docteur Émile Roux, then turn right to walk along the eastern ramparts – view of the church of Obézines below on the right. A little further on, turn left to follow Rue Fanfrelin, which leads to Rue Hergé.
(5) Head up to the left, looking out for Franquin's " Gaston et Prunelle " in the Passage Marengo, and on the square, the bust of Hergé, creator of Tintin, and Got and Pétillon's " Baron Noir " at the top of a façade. François Walthéry's " Natacha et P'tit bout d'chique " are at the end of the pedestrian street.
Turn left to cross the gardens of the Town Hall, which houses the Tourist Office. Continue along Place New York to the theatre.
(6) Cross over to go around it and see " Les coulisses du théâtre " by Dupuy Berberian. Turn right to reach the ramparts, turn right again, pass in front of the Carnot statue and continue for 150 metres.
(7) Cross over to reach the small Rue d'Arc on the right, which leads to the cathedral and the Angoulême museum. Walk along Rue de l'Évêché, continue to Rue de Beaulieu, turn left to see Corto Maltese on the corner of Rue du Petit Saint-Cybard, then Réalité, sortie de secours by Marc-Antoine Mathieu.
Turn left onto Rue du Minage, which leads to Place de la Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. Turn right, ignore Rue d'Épernon, follow Rempart du Midi and walk along it, admiring the view from the balcony of Angoulême towards the south entrance. At the foot of the ramparts lies the Jardin Vert. Go around the Lycée Guez de Balzac, continue along Allée du Souvenir Français and then Rempart de Beaulieu to reach Place de Turenne.
(8) Turn right onto Rue Bouillaud. Cross Place du Minage to take Rue Froide, then Rue du Soleil to the left and Rue Taillefer immediately to the right. Turn left onto Rue Saint-André in front of the Palais de Justice to see Yslaire's " Mémoires du XXème ciel " in the square. At the end of the street, turn left and then keep right onto Rue Sainte-Marie.
(9) Follow Rue de Genève to the left. Cross Place du Palet to reach Rue Saint-Étienne. At the end, turn right and go to the viewpoint over the Charente before joining and following Boulevard Pasteur to the right, where you will find " Titeuf " by Zep and " La fille des remparts " by Max Cabanes. Head down towards the station via Rampe d'Aguesseau, where Berlion and Corbeyran's " Sales mioches " are hidden, then along Avenue Gambetta, home to Morris's " Lucky Luke, les Daltons et Jolly Jumper " at No. 58 and Franck Margerin's " Un samedi à Malakoff " at No. 153.
Go around the roundabout on the left to follow Avenue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, then turn left to return to the station forecourt (S/E).
