The pidgeon hunting huts at Pujo-le-Plan

A lovely route starting from the Tenay stud farm. Beginning on the greenway, the route then runs alongside maize fields (depending on the season) before heading into pine and oak forests, rejoining the greenway as it passes a pretty watermill.

Description of the walk

Start from the Tenay Stud Farm on the greenway at Pujo Le Plan.

(S/E) With your back to the stud farm, follow the greenway to the right towards the north-west. Pass the hamlet of Le Pellé on your right and you’ll soon come to a path branching off to the left.

(1) Follow this path, enter the forest, pass under the pidgeon hunting hut and continue to a T-junction.

(2) Turn right and take the DFCI track heading south-west.

(3) At the junction with the Pujo Le Plan departmental road, turn right and continue along the road.

(4) At the three-way junction between the Route de Pujo Le Plan and the Route d’Atassenx, turn left and then immediately right onto the dirt track heading south.

(5) Turn right, walk alongside the pidgeon hunting huts and cross the edge of the cultivated field.

(6) Look for a way down to the Route du Château (to avoid the ditch) and take it, turning right.

(7) At the transformer, turn right and take the dirt track which joins a road.

(8) At the junction with the Pujo–Le Plan road, turn right.

(4) Carry on straight ahead, in the opposite direction to the way you came, and pass the Mouliot junction.

(9) Turn right onto Chemin du Benquets and continue to the transformer. Carry on to the houses, go round them on the right and then on the left. Follow the path along the edge of the woodland, which runs first alongside a ditch and then through a poplar forest.

(10) At the boundary between the poplar forest and the oak forest, enter the forest on the right to emerge onto Chemin du Sage on the left. Follow this path until you reach a road, which you take to the right for about 100 metres.

(11) Turn left onto the path marked ‘no entry without authorisation’ and follow it until it opens out into a meadow, which you cross.

(12) Turn right into the woodland, then right again to walk alongside the motorway.

(13) At the junction with Route du Moulin, turn left and continue over the bridge above the A65. Pass the mill, keeping it on your right, and carry on until you reach Rue du René.

(14) At the red half-timbered house, turn left into this street and join the greenway.

(15) Turn left onto this path, cross over the A65 and continue to the stud farm (S/E).

The car park indicated at the start is private. The equestrian centre asked us to leave. The path is fenced off, with private signs, on a road between the first two pidgeon hunting huts.
At the cornfields, it is no longer passable (tall grass, brambles, corn, ditches).
Otherwise, there are some beautiful stretches through the forest. A GPS is essential.

Hello,
At 10, follow the ditch until you reach the gap (without a ditch) between the oak and poplar woods.
Kind regards

Hello,
An interesting walk, with a good balance between footpaths and roads.
On route 5, there were a few difficulties (on 23 June) in finding the edge of the cultivated field because of the tall grass.
To reach point 10 via the Benquet path, you have to cross the ditch, which may be a problem when it’s full.

Kind regards

Hello,
The walk can easily be done on foot. To turn right onto the road leading to the castle, simply follow the edge of the cultivated field (or uncultivated, depending on the season) until you reach the road, then walk along it to the left (following the ditch) until you find a path that avoids having to jump over the ditch, and turn right onto the road.
Enjoy your walk

Hello,

I find this new walk interesting and would really like to give it a go. I have two questions about it:

- Can you also do it on foot, as I noticed it was described as ‘on horseback’?
- On section 6, isn’t it rather difficult to find a place to turn right onto the road to the castle?

Thank you for this information.
Kind regards
