From the N22, head towards the hamlet of Clonkeen. Cross the River Clydagh and continue along a narrow road for about 2.5 km. There are a few parking spaces at the starting point.
(S/E) Take the forest road. Go through the gate using the steps on the left, which allow hikers to pass easily. A zigzag climb followed by a straight climb then crosses the forest. Turn left onto the path at the edge of the forest.
(1) Follow the path that continues north, climbing to the right. This will take you to an unnamed peak (altitude 555 m).
(2) Continue north on a moderate slope. The slope becomes steeper as you approach the first summit. The trail runs along a fence on very spongy ground. This will take you to The Paps West.
(3) Descend following the path on the right and reach the low point between the two peaks.
(4) Continue east and climb back up towards the second peak, which is clearly visible. Finally, you will reach The Paps East.
(5) Begin the descent on the other side, towards the east. The path quickly disappears and you will need to navigate by sight, aiming for the edge of the forest, the forest road and a barrier: be careful on the descent through the heather. Go through the barrier and you will find a very rocky path. Follow the fence and then climb over it to reach the forest road.
(6) Follow the forest road to the right until you reach a farm.
(7) Turn right and pass a few houses before reaching a crossroads.
(8) Turn right and continue straight ahead to the car park (S/E).
