The two cemeteries of Vignemont and the Fontaine Saint-Pierre

Starting from two moving military cemeteries, French and German, built simultaneously and side by side in 1918, a short circular route passes by a fountain in the middle of the woods.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Paths of remembrance from the Great War

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park opposite the military cemeteries (information board about the hike).

Yellow markings + "Route de la Fontaine Saint-Pierre"signposts
The markings are sparse and faded; signs on dedicated posts are present at the main intersections.

(S/E) Opposite the cemeteries, turn left (north) between the fields and then along the edge of the woods. Enter the woods and go downhill. You will come to a small road; follow it to the right. Ignore the road that branches off to the right towards the Domaine de Thésée.

(1) About 50 metres further on, before the sign for Marquéglise, turn right onto a path leading towards the woods. Enter the woods and go uphill. At the crossroads, take thefirst path on the left (the one just above is private). Stay on the flat and pass below the "castle" on the right. Leave the woods and continue along the edge until you come to a field fence.

(2) Turn right and walk along the meadow on your left. At the corner of the fence, continue straight ahead and re-enter the woods. At an intersection (not shown on the map, approximate location on the route), turn left towards the Fontaine Saint-Pierre (sign, metal cross).

(3) Retrace your steps and, back at the intersection, take the main path on the left. Climb steadily up the gently sloping path and ignore any vague paths branching off to the sides. At a T-junction (large reservoir on the right), turn left, leave the woods and descend towards the houses.

(4) At the tarmac road (bench), follow a small lane to the right. At No. 100, at a fork, turn right and leave a polygonal (almost round) house on your left. Note the church of Vignemont on your left, pass the cemetery and continue along a grassy path. At a crossroads, continue straight ahead between the fields. Turn left onto the path and you will soon rejoin the tarmac road.

(5) At the stop sign, turn right. Atthe second stop sign, follow the D41 to the right towards Marquéglise. About 200m after the Antheuil-Portes exit sign, turn right towards the military cemetery. Follow a narrow road and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Bring hiking boots despite the short distance of the route.

There are no water sources or shops along the route.

A detailed map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description). The route was designed and signposted by the Communauté de communes des deux vallées.

Hike completed by the author on 23 September 2018.

Worth a visit

- French military cemetery and German military cemetery (S/E). More than 3,000 French soldiers in the former, more than 5,000 German soldiers in the latter... These two cemeteries are adjacent to each other, which adds to the emotion.

- Saint-Pierre fountain (4). A metal cross has been erected near the spring, which may dry up in the dry season...

A route taken on a beautiful Saturday morning in March. Very easy route with no difficulties, just two small climbs. However, on the day we did this hike, the paths were wet and therefore very slippery. Completed in 1 hour and 12 minutes.

A very pleasant route as it is not always in direct sunlight and does not involve too much road travel, which is rather good. It is a shame that the fountain sign is almost invisible; one could pass by without seeing it.
I recommend it.
