Le Salève via the old funicular railway route

This hike takes you up to the Salève via a (steep) climb up the wooded slope, following the route of the old funicular railway to reach the cable car station and then the Observatory. Once on the Salève ridge, you can enjoy the many remarkable views over Geneva, Lake Geneva, the Jura Mountains and unforgettable panoramas across the entire Mont Blanc range.

Description of the walk

Park near the church in Esserts-Salève.

(S/E) With the church on your right, head towards the nearby junction.

(1) Turn right and stay on the tarmac road. Continue to the Mornex Golf Club.

(2) Turn left onto the path leading to the tennis courts, then immediately turn right onto theGR® (red and white markings). Follow the path as it climbs steeply through the woods.

(3) At the signpost “Chemin du Funiculaire”, turn left towards “Téléphérique par Chemin du Funiculaire”. You can either continue along the Chemin du Funiculaire or take the rural path known as the Prévuaz, which runs parallel on the left and is also a mountain bike trail. This option, which I chose, is more interesting as the path winds through the woods, but it is more challenging. Please note ⚠️ this track is used by mountain bikers, so please be careful and give way to them.

(4) At the junction of the two paths, you can either continue on the mountain bike trail or take the Chemin du Funiculaire to have a bit of a rest, as the climb is steep (choice of route).

(5) At the wooden bridge, rejoin the MTB trail on the left, descending slightly through the woods. Keep going straight ahead, maintaining the same direction. This will take you to the Chemin du Funiculaire and then the tarmac road known as the Chemin de la Grange Passey.

(6) Turn right ontothe GR® and head towards the cable car, which is 10 minutes away, not 5 as indicated on the sign. Follow this route to the cable car station. Go up to the terrace and admire the view of Geneva, Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains (orientation table).

(7) Continue along theGR® towards the Observatory. Pass by Les Treize Arbres and the paragliding launch pad, then stop off at the Buddhist monastery if you wish to rest a while and meditate.

Continue towards the Observatory and along the ridge, admiring the many magnificent views of Geneva, Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains on one side and the Mont Blanc range on the other. Pass the Observatory on your right and continue along theGR® towards La Croisette. Join a tarmac road and follow it for about 150 m.

(8) At the sign for "Sur la Grande Gorge - car park", turn left towards Esserts-Salève and follow the path through a mountain pasture and then a wood.

(9) At the sign for “Grand Gaby”, continue along the path opposite towards Esserts Salève. Follow this path, which descends steeply after bending to the right.

(10) Turn left, still heading towards Esserts Salève, and continue down the steep path, ignoring the paths branching off to the right or left.

(1) Once you reach the tarmac road at the “Chemin de La Sauge” sign, turn left to finish at the church square (S/E).

Unfortunately, on that day we climbed into fog and couldn't see the Geneva basin at all...
When we arrived at the Observatory, we were lucky enough to be above this beautiful sea of clouds and could see all the high peaks surrounding us, phew!!!

The hike up the Salève is undoubtedly an experience well worth the trip; however, the route itself has a few shortcomings worth mentioning. Firstly, it can be difficult to find a parking space near the church. Secondly, a gruelling climb awaits hikers up to point 8, a stretch that some may find never-ending. Much to my dismay, the cable car was undergoing maintenance. At the summit, the panoramic views offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding area, and apparently you can drive right up to the top. As for the descent, your toes will be put through their paces and won’t thank you for it 😭😛. Even though the hike can be exhausting, it was well worth the effort. It’s important to be wary of cyclists hurtling down the mountain at full speed without taking any particular care for pedestrians. You should therefore remain vigilant when they approach. Take water and food with you. Finally, avoid hiking in wet weather.

A lovely route that takes us on a tour of the Lake Geneva region.
It’s a shame the weather wasn’t really on our side.
We were able to enjoy mild temperatures. The route runs largely through woodland, which is lovely in hot weather.
Very well signposted.
A pleasant return route with a gentle gradient from the Observatory, alternating between woodland and open woodland.

A lovely route that takes us around the Les Maniques basin – it’s a shame the weather wasn’t really on our side.
We were able to enjoy mild temperatures, with most of the route running through woodland, which is a real bonus in hot weather
