Le Puy-en-Velay, a City of Art and History

Le Puy-en-Velay is a crossroads for several long-distance hiking trails such as theGR®70, the Stevenson Trail, theGR®3Loire Trail, theGR®700, the Regordane Trail and, of course, the Way of St James. As soon as you arrive in Le Puy-en-Velay, you can already sense the significant influence that religion has had on the town.
Le Puy-en-Velay marks my first rest day after 15 days of walking on my Way of St James
I discovered a town of Art and History, famous for its lace, its green lentils, its verbena, but above all for its incredible religious heritage.

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the campsite entrance, take the path through the trees to reach the Promenade de la Borne. Continue north-eastwards along the river. Pass the football stadium on your right before arriving beneath the Pont Tordu.

(1) Continue south-east along the River La Borne, go under a road bridge, past a car park and allotments, then after a 180° bend head south-west. Walk alongside the allotments on your right and continue to the fork. Turn left, cross a small bridge and turn right into Rue Mario Versepuy. Continue to the Stop sign.

(2) Cross Boulevard de Cluny with care and continue straight ahead into Rue de Valenciennes. Turn immediately right into Rue de Craponne (against the flow of traffic) to arrive in front of the cemetery. Head left onto Chemin de Saint-Sébastien and continue to the Stop sign.

(3) Turn right and, immediately, head right up the steps of the cemetery path. Be careful, it’s quite a steep climb. Take the one-way street opposite, which leads to a car park. Cross this car park and head right into Rue de Vienne towards the Upper Town (against the flow of traffic). Go under a porch and continue to the fork in the road. Turn right towards the cathedral, go under a porch followed by an archway in Rue Saint-Georges. Turn left after the archway to arrive in front of the Pilgrim Centre, then right to arrive in front of the entrance to Notre-Dame-du-Puy Cathedral, which is open to visitors.

(4) After visiting the cathedral, retrace your steps and turn left onto Rue Saint-Georges. Pass under a vault of the cathedral then head right towards the statue of the Virgin Mary and the cloister. Pass the cloister to arrive in front of the Chapel of the Penitents

(5) Head up Rue du Cloître. Take the stairs to reach the ticket office. Once you’ve bought your ticket, make the steep climb to the top of Rocher Corneille, at the foot of the statue of the Virgin Mary. Please note, the climb is quite challenging. You can climb right up to the top of the statue, where you’ll have a panoramic view of the town.

(6) Walk back down Rocher Corneille to return to the front of the Chapelle des Pénitents.

(5) Walk between the Chapelle des Pénitents and the cloister, heading towards Rocher Saint-Michel along Rue Saint-Mayol. When the street splits in two, take the left-hand path downhill, pass under the archway and turn left onto Rue Grasmanent to arrive in front of the Chapelle Saint-Alexis.

(7) Continue straight on along Rue de la Visitation, then turn right onto Rue Gouteyron towards Rocher Saint-Michel and the Chapelle Saint-Clair. You will arrive at a car park on Place Monseigneur de Gailard. Cross the car park and go down the stairs at the far end to reach Place Saint-Clair, next to a memorial stone. Turn left and continue to the Chapelle Saint-Clair.

(8) Turn right onto Rue du Rocher, going against the one-way traffic. You will arrive at the entrance porch of Rocher Saint-Michel. After paying your entrance fee, climb the 265 steps to the top of the rock, where you will arrive in front of the Chapelle Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe.

(9) Return along the same route as on the way up to the Chapel of Saint-Alexis.

(7) With your back to the chapel, head straight ahead along Rue Bec de Lièvre. You will arrive at the foot of the cathedral, in front of the monumental staircase. Turn right onto Rue des Tables. Walk past the fountain and Place des Tables and turn left, following the red and white markings, onto Rue Raphaël (one-way street), which continues as Rue Chènebouterie. Pass Place du Plot and its fountain and continue straight ahead onto Rue Saint-Gilles. Continue until you reach Boulevard Saint-Louis, in front of the Banque Populaire.

(10) Turn left, continue to the first pedestrian crossing to cross the boulevard carefully, then turn right and left to reach Place du Breuil. Walk between the theatre, the courthouse and the superb Crozatier Fountain with its spectacular water features. Continue southwards to enter the Jardin Henri Vinay on Avenue du Général de Gaulle. Take a stroll through this park, rich in trees and featuring a bandstand, a conservatory and the Crozatier Museum, before exiting on the west side onto Avenue du Général de Gaulle. First turn right then left and walk along Place du Breuil to Boulevard Saint-Louis. Turn left and carefully cross the boulevard to find yourself in front of the Banque Populaire.

(10) Continue north-west along the boulevard, crossing several junctions before reaching the roundabout with the statue of La Fayette.

(11) Head towards the recycling centre, staying on Boulevard Saint-Louis. Walk past the Tour Pannessac and continue northwards until you reach a large junction.

(12) Turn right towards Saint-Etienne and the campsite on Avenue d’Aiguilhe. Cross the avenue carefully as soon as possible and walk along the left-hand pavement. Continue north-east along Boulevard de Bonneville, passing the tennis club before reaching the car park opposite the imposing Rocher Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe. At the roundabout, turn left to arrive at the entrance to the Camping du Puy-en-Velay (S/E).

This route was undertaken very recently. There were few people on the town’s streets, despite the long weekend of 8 May. The town of Le Puy is steeped in history and boasts a rich and fascinating religious heritage that is well worth exploring and learning more about.
Thank you to the Visorando team for their work.

A walk that follows on from the Mont Denise route.
Very pleasant and easy to follow, it offers a closer look at Le Puy-en-Velay, a town modest in size but with a prestigious past.
Thanks to the hiker for suggesting this route.
