You can get to the start of the hike by bus or car. In June 2022, parking was available in a dedicated car park for around £25 for a camper van.
On this route, you will take stone steps built by hand by Nepalese Sherpas.
The hike begins and ends at the dedicated car park, where toilets are available.
(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the path that leads to a road, which you follow to the right until it turns at a right angle.
(1) Leave the road and continue along the path that crosses a stream and offers a view of a waterfall.
(2) Continue by turning left and crossing another stream. Further on, continue to the right and you will reach a viewpoint overlooking the fjord. You can also see a waterfall in the distance.
(3) Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at Lake Tjødnane, where you can dip your feet in the water.
(4) Continue between two lakes and go around a third lake on the right to reach a fork.
(5) Turn left onto the Cliff Trail.
(6) Keep walking on the stone slabs, being careful if the ground is wet as it is slippery (another view of a waterfall). Continue along the same path to reach the viewpoint over Lysefjord.
(7) Continue straight ahead to Preikestolen, a viewpoint overlooking the famous rock formation. Be careful of crowds.
(8) Head back down and there are two options for the return journey:
- return via the same route you took on the way there.
- At the fork, turn left (marked route).
(9) Turn left onto the Hill Trail, keeping an eye on the map as the route is not easy to find here. Cross a wooded area and return to the fork in the road.
(5) Turn left and retrace your steps back to the Preikestolen car park (S/E).
