Preikestolen

One of Norway's most famous hikes is the climb up Preikestolen (or Pulpit Rock) above the Lysefjord. It is moderately difficult, so I recommend doing this hike in summer. It is very touristy but definitely worth it. Preikestolen is a must-see if you are in the Stavanger area. The cliff rises 604 metres above the fjord. The flat summit makes it a beautiful viewpoint.

Description of the walk

You can get to the start of the hike by bus or car. In June 2022, parking was available in a dedicated car park for around £25 for a camper van.

On this route, you will take stone steps built by hand by Nepalese Sherpas.
The hike begins and ends at the dedicated car park, where toilets are available.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the path that leads to a road, which you follow to the right until it turns at a right angle.

(1) Leave the road and continue along the path that crosses a stream and offers a view of a waterfall.

(2) Continue by turning left and crossing another stream. Further on, continue to the right and you will reach a viewpoint overlooking the fjord. You can also see a waterfall in the distance.

(3) Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at Lake Tjødnane, where you can dip your feet in the water.

(4) Continue between two lakes and go around a third lake on the right to reach a fork.

(5) Turn left onto the Cliff Trail.

(6) Keep walking on the stone slabs, being careful if the ground is wet as it is slippery (another view of a waterfall). Continue along the same path to reach the viewpoint over Lysefjord.

(7) Continue straight ahead to Preikestolen, a viewpoint overlooking the famous rock formation. Be careful of crowds.

(8) Head back down and there are two options for the return journey:
- return via the same route you took on the way there.
- At the fork, turn left (marked route).

(9) Turn left onto the Hill Trail, keeping an eye on the map as the route is not easy to find here. Cross a wooded area and return to the fork in the road.

(5) Turn left and retrace your steps back to the Preikestolen car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is very touristy, so you will definitely not be alone on the trail. I personally did this hike in June 2022 at the start of the tourist season and there were already a lot of people.
This walk does not require any great technical knowledge, so many people set off early in the morning when the weather is nice, meaning you don't run any great risks. But be careful, the helicopter came twice during our day's hike. If I were to do it again, I would try the hike at the beginning or end of the day to avoid the crowds and enjoy the sunshine.
Toilets are available at the start and finish.

Worth a visit

Hello,
i travelled to Norway in the last century.

We only encountered Norwegians, and very rarely at that. I therefore recommend this country to those who want to escape the crowds. I will revise my recommendation in light of the photo in the "Sherpas" link. They have also discovered the concept of must-see attractions.

Preikestolen has been a popular international destination for decades and had over 300,000 visitors each year.

I'm amazed...
