The Pilon du Roi

This short but fairly challenging hike takes you along numerous small paths and immerses you in a fairly wild area. It also allows you to reach the famous Pilon, visible from all over the Aix region.

Description of the walk

Access: To reach the car park from the centre of Simiane-Collongue, take the road heading towards Les Putis in a south-easterly direction. Follow this road until you reach the ‘Simiane’ town boundary sign and take the road on the left that crosses a bridge: this is the Route des Putis. Drive through the hamlet of Les Putis and continue until you reach a T-junction, then turn left onto the Route des Marres.
Once you reach Les Marres, park in the large tennis court car park on the right.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the short stretch of road then continue southwards on the straight path furthest to the left which climbs (there is a well here). Stay on this path as it climbs through the woods. It is a challenging climb and turns south-west until you reach a wide, flat track.

(1) Take the path on the right; this path is very open: beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and Sainte-Victoire Mountain. After a few dozen metres, take the path on the left that climbs (do not stay on the main path that descends to the right). When you reach the ridge, take the path straight ahead towards Le Pilon (do not take the one on the left that descends). Follow this path marked in blue.

(2) Pass to the left of Le Pilon (south-facing slope), then take the path on the right which descends (signposted “Simiane” on a painted rock).

(3) Join a wide track, cross it, and take the path continuing straight ahead which descends.
You will then reach the Rochers de Sainte-Magdeleine, which you walk alongside. The path is challenging and quite tricky.

(4) You’ll reach the main path; don’t take it, but follow it for 20 metres. You’ll then come to a path; take the one on the left going downhill and stay on this path, which descends to the right and is marked in green (do not take the path on the left). Then stay on the path straight ahead (do not take the path that heads back to the right).

(5) Turn right (do not continue straight on). Pass under the high-voltage power lines, ignoring the paths to the right and left. You will reach a small tarmac road, with the Fontaine de Venel; take this road to the right.

(6) Stay on this road until you come to a small concrete road branching off to the right towards the reservoirs.

(7) When you reach the second high-voltage line where the concrete surface returns, below the reservoirs, take the path on the left that follows the high-voltage line and stay on this path; do not take the single track on the right that goes uphill.
At the small pond to the right of the track, take the track on the left that goes downhill. Before reaching the high-voltage pylon, turn left. Then pass two tracks branching off to the left and stay on the track on the right. Then keep left without taking the track that heads back. This track takes us back to the car park (start/finish).

At the car park entrance, there’s a barrier – you’ll need to pay €5 to enter the site!
At the start of the walk, a signpost indicates the ‘Le Pilon du Roi’ circular route, which takes 2 hours 45 minutes!
The climb is steep but enjoyable for those who like a bit of a scramble!
After this climb, you’ll reach a forest track, where another signpost indicates a right-hand alternative that extends the route if you wish, including a section around the Pilon, but this takes 4 hours! I chose to go right, which indicates a direct 2h45 route to Pilon du Roi, following the spot-on signposting (blue) for the rock loop or (green) for the other variant!
After going round the rock, the signposting gets a bit tricky! Thanks to the app for helping me find the route again! A long descent along narrow, stony paths – quite steep but enjoyable!
The rest of the walk is quite nice through the forest; watch out for marker (7) on Visorando – a lovely climb to the right up a concrete track, finishing gently before reaching the car park! Happy walking to all!

Superb route
Please note: the path downhill after Le Pilon is difficult to identify. It is immediately after going around Le Pilon, heading downhill towards the north.
Then follow the green markings (poorly done and very irregular along the route).

Very beautiful view from Le Pilon, magnificent view of the Chaîne de l'Étoile, Sainte Victoire and Marseille.
However, from Le Pilon onwards, the signposts are not very visible, so it's very easy to get lost... we followed the Viso Rando map with GPS!

The route (trail no. 429559) was poorly marked in terms of distance (6.54 km advertised) and time (only 3 hours...). It was difficult to find the car park at the start. A local resident saw us searching and advised us to start from another location further away. A path took us along a fence for a long time, which wasn't very pleasant... We managed to find the path leading to the foot of the Pilon du Roi. Magnificent view, superb location. For a Friday, we encountered quite a few people on arrival. However, as it was school holidays and Easter Friday, it was probably normal for there to be a few people around.
We will return via a different route. There are many possibilities.
We followed trail no. 429559. We started at point 6 (parking at the municipal car park, which is free, unlike the tennis court car park, which costs €5) and went to point 2.
On the way back down, we took a very steep mini trail that starts a little after point 3, on the right. We didn't feel like retracing our steps along the fence.
I must emphasise the magnificent view when you reach the Pilon du Roi!

Very vague directions regarding which turns to take once you reach Pilon!
We got lost twice, even though we walk a lot.
The end of the hike is also particularly uninteresting.

There is a difficulty after the Pilon du Roy when starting the descent on the north face (point 2). The green markings disappear. I did not see the word "Simiane" painted on a rock.
Be careful at point 2, leave the blue markings that descend on the south slope.
From point 3 to point 4, you can also stay on the main path.

Superb panoramic views.
There are numerous trails and paths, so be sure to follow the route!

A very pleasant walk with a fairly strenuous but short climb at the start. The rest of the route is accessible to all. Very pretty views of Marseille harbour. Signposting is adequate except at Pilon du Roy, where I had a little trouble finding the fork in the path. Otherwise, a lovely walk for the whole family. I would recommend taking the DFCI track, which is longer but more accessible for novice hikers.

A beautiful hike on a sunny winter's day.
At the start, there was a bit of a steep climb. When we reached the foot of the Pilon, the view was unfortunately foggy, but in the distance we could make out the Ventoux, the Signal de Lure and, further to the right, the Sommet de la Fréma, all covered in snow. The return trip was nice, with a pleasant walk through the woods. The estimated walking time was exactly 3 hours. Adding 45 minutes for a tasty snack at the Pilon, it took about 4 hours. Perfect. Thank you to whoever mapped out this route. I highly recommend it.

A very beautiful hike in magnificent weather.
It offers views of Gardanne, Sainte-Victoire, the Étang de Berre, and, on the other side, Marseille and the Frioul Islands.
You need to pay close attention at certain junctions, particularly at the foot of the Pilon du Roi to descend back down to Simiane.
The use of GPS is recommended, or you should read the very detailed hike description very carefully.
Some parts of the route require experience of walking in steep terrain.
