Start of the route at a place called Le Climont on the D214 south of the mountain "Le Climont". Leave your car opposite a holiday accommodation.
(S/E) 100m to the east, the route starts and follows the hiking trail marked with a Yellow Cross, which climbs towards the summit.
(1) At the summit of Le Climont (965m), a magnificent observation tower offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
The route down the other side of the mountain can be difficult to find in heavy snow – you’ll be walking on an invisible path – so you must follow the markings (Yellow Cross).
A Yellow Cross marker fixed to a wooden post to the west of the tower indicates the direction to follow. Head north-west (bearing 300°) for a distance of approximately 600m.
The path winds around a pile of sandstone boulders, then begins the descent to reach the first hairpin bend (Yellow Cross marker on a young fir tree).
Head east (bearing 75°) for about 400m to the next hairpin bend – the descent is now steeper for about 500m; at the next change of direction, head north-east (bearing 60°). After 200m, you reach a path (altitude 650m).
(2) Follow the path westwards; it descends then curves in a wide circular loop to turn eastwards.
300m further on, at a junction, head downwards towards the north-west (bearing 320°) and reach the tarmac road D214, which we follow for 130m northwards.
(3) Turn right onto a forest track which we follow continuously for 1,300m heading east. Join another path marked by a Blue Line.
(4) Follow this path to the Col de Steige (534m).
(5) The return journey from the pass is very straightforward: follow the Blue Line markings that we encountered on the way to the Col de Steige, which will take us back to the starting point; numerous signs indicate the direction (S/E).
