Access by car: parking available at 19 Chemin du Solarium, near the entrance to the Laboratoire de Physique des Deux Infinis in Bordeaux. Please note: if you wish to use the car park, check opening times and accessibility – it is closed in the evenings and at weekends.
Access by bus: get off at the “Maison Neuve” stop on Line 39 – Avenue de la Poterie, then turn left towards Chemin du Solarium.
(S) The tour starts in front of the entrance to the Laboratoire de Physique des Deux Infinis. This first point corresponds to the earliest moments of the universe, where the information panels on the Big Bang are located. Head towards Avenue de la Poterie.
(1) The first marker is located at the junction of Avenue de la Poterie and Chemin du Solarium. This is the marker labelled“13.5 billion years ago”. Cross Avenue de la Poterie, turn left and walk for about 200 m. Then turn right onto the small grassy path, near Rue du Vivier. Reach the second marker, “13 billion years ago”.
(2) Cross Allée Paul Cézanne to reach the Parc du Château d’Ornon. Continue straight ahead, then turn left, following the red and white markings of the GR® Métropolitain, and join Route de Canéjan.
(3) Cross the road and pass the marker “12 billion years ago”. Continue through the woodland, following the markings, and emerge onto Chemin des Moulins.
(4) Cross the road by taking a short first turn right then left: you will pass the signpost “11.5 billion years ago”. Continue straight on, following the GR® Métropolitain route. Reach the footbridge over the Eau Bourde, ignore it and follow the path to the left along the stream. Enter Montgaillard Park, walk alongside the Eau Bourde and pass several footbridges on your right before turning left to return to Chemin des Moulins.
(5) Cross the road and enter Parc de Saint-Albe via the path on the left, leaving the GR® markings behind. Near the bridge is the signpost “10.5 billion years ago ”. Continue straight on to the top of the park, where you’ll find information panels on the theme of the stars. Turn right and join the Route de Pessac.
(6) Turn left, continue straight on, and pass the signpost“10 billion years ago”. Cross Rue de Loustalot and head towards Parc de l’Ermitage.
(7) Turn right to enter the park, cross Avenue Jean Larrieu, walk past the Château de l’Ermitage, then head right to leave the park. Join Avenue Charles et Émile Lestage.
(8) Turn left to follow this avenue for a few dozen metres, then turn right onto Avenue Jean Coquelin to reach Route de Canéjan.
(9) Turn right, pass the sign saying “8.5 billion years ago”, then continue straight on.
(10) Go round the roundabout on the left, cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn left to walk along the right-hand side of the road for about 200 m. Turn right onto the dirt track, continue straight ahead; the entrance to Cotor-Laburthe Park is opposite. Stay on the path, pass the signpost “8 billion years ago” and rejoin the GR® Métropolitain route, which you should follow to the right.
(11) Take the path on the left, staying on the GR®. Continue straight on for about a hundred metres, pass the signpost “7.5 billion years ago” and follow the GR® route to the park exit.
(12) At the signpost “7 billion years ago”, turn left and cross the bridge over the ring road. At the roundabout, turn left then take the first street on the right, Avenue Camille Julian. Continue straight on to the next roundabout , passing the signpost “6.5 billion years ago”
(13) At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue Jean Babin and continue straight on. Pass the signpost “6 billion years ago” and continue to the junction with Rue Lucie Aubrac. Turn right and continue for a few dozen metres.
(14) Cross Rue Lucie Aubrac and continue straight on into the car park. Cross Avenue du Docteur Albert Schweitzer and continue into the Bois de Saige.
(15) As you leave the woods, turn right at the signpostmarked “5.5 billion years ago”, follow Rue des Résédas and turn right again towards the COSEC de Saige. Enter through the small gate: on your left are the panels on the theme of exoplanets. Continue straight along the path until you reach Avenue du Docteur Albert Schweitzer.
(16) Cross the avenue, turn left then right to pass the signpost“5 billion years ago”. Thencontinue straight on along the Esplanade des Antilles.
(17) At the roundabout, turn left and cross the Esplanade des Antilles. Cut diagonally across the small parkand walk past the signs on the theme of the Solar System. As you leave the park, turn left, walk past the marker “4.5 billion years ago” and then head right. Continue straight on alongside the tram tracks, passing the marker “4 billion years ago”.
(18) Cross the tram tracks, continue in the same direction and pass the signpost marked “3.5 billion years ago”.
(19) Go round the roundabout on the right and head straight ahead. On your left are the panels on the theme of the emergence of life. Continue straight on along Avenue de Facultés, following the tram line, and pass the marker “3 billion years ago”. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the University Library of Science and Technology, where you’ll find the panels on the theme of biological diversity and the marker“2.5 billion years ago”.
(20) Cross the “La Porte des Étoiles” bridge, which spans Avenue Roul, heading towards the university campus. Continue straight on for about 500 m and pass the marker “2 billion years ago”. Go round the roundabout on the left, follow the Étang Bonnefont and head towards the University of Bordeaux exit on the Cours de la Libération.
(21) Cross over towards the University of Bordeaux Botanical Garden. Turn left at the entrance and, at the end of the path, turn right: you will pass the marker “1.5 billion years ago”. Walk around the garden, return to the Cours de la Libération and cross it again. Then head slightly to the left, walking alongside the Physics Department, then turn right towards Étang Bonnefont and walk alongside it at a distance , passing the marker “0.5 billion years ago”. Then turn left at a 90° angle; you are now 500 million years from the finish line or the present! Continue straight on for a few dozen metres, turn right, then continue straight on again for 400 m to reach the final marker “Present”, located at the Entrée Béthanie of the University of Bordeaux. Nearby you will find the final panels on the theme of the human lineage and the Anthropocene ( E).
