Lavada des 25 Fontaines walks
The Levadas of Rabaçal
It runs along the three very different Levadas, all interconnected by sloping paths. The route covers a varied landscape, crossing over diverse vegetation, and with beautiful views of the waterfalls. A hike whose direction and length can be adjusted depending on wishes or circumstances.
N.B. The displayed altitude difference is higher than reality (and consequently so is the average time for completion). Expect more in the realm of 600 metres in altitude.
Walks near Lavada des 25 Fontaines
Lévada Grande or do Moinho
Take a cab/taxi almost to the beginning of the levada, then walk back down to Porto Moniz.
Fajã Quebrada Nova
This is a short but intense downhill hike to Fajã Quebrada Nova, a small farming hamlet on an ancient scree slope (see definition of "Fajã") at the ocean's edge and at the foot of the Achadas da Cruz cliffs.
The cable car ride up (for a fee, €3 in 2022) will also give you some thrills!
Curral das Freiras
The hike is technically easy but quite physically demanding (steep descent).
Parking is available in the car park near the shops.
The path is clearly marked and well signposted. Start by heading to the viewpoint (access path to the left of the shops); it would be a shame to miss it (even if it is very busy with tourists). You can admire a magnificent view of the village nestled in the centre of an ancient volcanic crater.
Retrace your steps to take the path down to the village of Curral das Freiras (to the right of the shops, signposted).
You’ll find plenty of places to quench your thirst and grab a bite to eat there. (Plenty of shops, though a bit pricey)
Please note! Steep gradient, as with many hikes in Madeira.
