Description of the walk

Park near the church in Gottignies.

(S/E) With your back to the church, take Rue de la Place to the left. You will very quickly reach the Gottignies village school, a building on the right, opposite No. 7.

(1) Head right towards the entrance gate (gravel) and go to the end of this area, up to the hedge. Then take a narrow path that heads off to the right. At the end of it, take the street to the left and reach a T-junction with Rue de la Place. Turn right and join the path that descends to the left (marked with a Yellow Rectangle ‘La Haute Wanze’).

(2) Follow this path down to Rue des Fonds. First turn left then right to join the path running alongside the Wanze; it is a very beautiful valley, but in heavy rain the path can be very muddy.
Join a path which, to the left, leads (off the route) to the Notre-Dame de Creuse Chapel; follow it to the right until you reach a road.

Off the Yellow Rectangle route

(3) Turn left and follow the road which climbs parallel to the E42 motorway. Then take thefirst tarmac track on the left. The tarmac gives way to a dirt track. Ignore the turnings on the right.

(4) Before a care home, take a track on the right. Go up and then down towards a crossroads. In the background, straight ahead, is the new Strépy-Thieu boat lift.

(5) Turn left, go uphill and pass between the wind turbines. At the top of the hill, ignore a turn-off on the left and note the view of the bell tower of Saint-Nicolas Church in Le Roeulx on the right. Continue north-north-east. Join a road and follow it to the right until you reach a junction with a chapel.

(6) Take the path branching off to the left (Green Rectangle signpost ‘Les Hayes du Roeulx’). Cross the road carefully and continue along the wide sunken path opposite. The path passes through a copse and reaches the highest point of the walk. On a clear day, there is a panoramic view to the left of the bell towers of Saint-Vincent Collegiate Church in Soignies. Continue to a crossroads.

Outside the Green Rectangle route

(7) Take the path leading down to the left, Rue Blanc Boquet. Ignore a turn-off on the left and continue west-north-west. The path turns left and joins a road.

(8) Cross the road carefully and follow the road straight ahead. Pass a road on the right and a second one on the left. You will reach a renovated house (with wooden cladding).

Yellow Rectangle Signpost

(9) Just past the house, take a path on the left that descends and joins the Wanze riverbed. Cross the river (the technical services of the town of Le Roeulx have installed bridges and footbridges for the convenience of walkers). Walk back up to a junction.

(10) Follow a dirt track to the right. You’ll reach a road at the entrance to the village of Gottignies; follow it straight ahead.

(11) At a left-hand bend, opposite a white house, follow the dead-end path to the right. At the end, turn left onto the path recently created by the Roeulx municipal services. The path descends towards the Wanze, crosses three bridges and leads to a road, Rue du Mont Coupé. Follow this road to the right, towards the village centre.

(12) When the street turns left, take the one leading off to the right, Rue des Prêtres. The street climbs and then descends. Just before the bottom of the descent, take a path that climbs to the left (be very careful). Cross Rue du Vent Val and follow the street located almost directly opposite the path’s exit. The street reaches a crossroads.

(13) Take the dirt track to the left. Further on, turn left again onto a path. Continue along Rue de la Grange aux Dîmes. At the end, first turn left then right into Rue du Vent Val to take a narrow path that passes in front of a chapel. At the end, follow a small street to the right to reach the car park of Gottignies Church (S/E).

A very beautiful route, especially around the village (narrow, unobtrusive paths), though slightly less interesting in the middle (rather monotonous through the fields). Several magnificent old willow trees of impressive size line the route. The round trip to the Chapelle de Creuse in its secluded setting is well worth it (not included in the description). Little tarmac. Still a few short muddy patches despite the dry weather; this route is probably not recommended during wet weather.

A truly lovely, idyllic walk. The route is mainly through the countryside, with very little tarmac. It can be a bit muddy at the start (depending on the weather, of course), but you can easily go round that section.

A lovely walk in the countryside, with beautiful scenery; it’s a mix of the Upper and Lower Wanze

Hello, thank you for your comments, and I’m delighted that you enjoyed the walk. As for the state of the hedges, I’ll send a message to the local council in Le Roeulx to bring this to their attention.

A lovely walk.
The start of the walk (the section past the school) was particularly overgrown on the day we did it. Untrimmed hedges on a very narrow path and lots of brambles, but apart from that it was brilliant.
We even had the pleasure of spotting a pheasant! An encounter we won’t forget in a hurry.
