La Roche Turpin from Égly station

The main aim of this walk is to reach La Roche Turpin from a station (RER C). La Roche Turpin is a magnificent natural area consisting of a sandstone plateau and its slopes, covered by a beautiful forest mainly populated by oaks (including some superb specimens), chestnut trees and Scots pines.
At the start, you can enjoy the path around the Bassin de Trévoix (Retenue de l'Orge). You then make a pleasant walk through the village of Bruyères-le-Châtel via a dense network of well-maintained footpaths. Next comes the beautiful forest of Bruyères-le-Châtel (although there are long straight stretches due to fences enclosing large areas).

Description of the walk

Égly and Breuillet stations are served by the RER C line heading towards Dourdan-la-Forêt (passing through Saint-Michel Notre-Dame and the François Mitterrand Library ).

(S) From the station, take the road that crosses the railway line via a level crossing and head north. Just after crossing the Orge, turn left onto the wide path that circles the Bassin de Trévoix. Follow the southern bank, then the western bank, then the northern bank, until you reach a bridge over the Rémarde leading to a small car park.

(1) Cross the car park, take the road on the right, then after 150 m take the stony path that climbs to the left, opposite the buildings of the Moulin de Trêvoix. Continue along the path to the D116, turn left and follow this road.

(2) Cross it via the underpass. Further on, you’ll reach the tarmac road near the first houses of the village; at the first junction, take a narrow path on the left until you come to a street.

(3) Cross it and take Rue de Vignes on the right. The street bends left then right. 100 m after this last bend, take a path that opens out to the left at a right angle. The path widens: cross a street at a pedestrian crossing, and continue straight ahead along the path, which is very narrow again. At the end, turn left, pass a beautiful wash house, then reach the church.

(4) Follow the path through the park from the war memorial. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, then immediately turn left onto the narrow tarmac path (Chemin de la Fontaine Beurlin). Turn right, then left (old wash house). When you reach Rue du Pont Lignol, turn right, then take the first street on the left, which becomes a path. At the end, take the street on the left.

(5) After 50 m, turn right and follow the boundary wall of the Château de Bruyères park on your right.

(6) At the crossroads, turn right to continue along the wall; a wire-mesh fence runs alongside the path on the left.
Cross the D97 with care: do not go straight ahead, but follow the path that branches off to the left at a 45° angle.

(7) At the T-junction (opposite the sign for “Forêt Départementale de la Roche Turpin”), take the track on the right. Once you reach the plateau, take the Route du Cardon on the left. After about 700 m, turn left towards the viewpoint, then return to the road and continue left until you reach the picnic area (three tables with benches + a covered shelter).

(8) Turn back for about 150 m to take a well-marked but steep path that descends to the right, leaving a few large rocks on your left. There are some very fine specimens of oak trees with numerous gnarled “branches”. When the slope levels off, veer left to walk along the foot of the plateau’s slopes and return to a junction you passed earlier.

(7) Retrace your steps until you reach another crossroads you passed on the way out.

(6) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. After about 1 km, walk along the left and then the right side of properties housing numerous caravans or motorhomes. The path is now tarmac; continue along the main path, which turns due south at a junction (elevation 108). Cross the D152 road. 200 m further on, a farm track crosses this tarmac path at a right angle.

(9) Take this track to the left (at the corner of a fenced-off property on the right). This track becomes a tarmac road (Rue de l’Abreuvoir) as it reaches the houses. When the street takes a hairpin bend to the left, continue straight ahead on the track (marked with a Red Ring on a white background (no entry)). You will reach a crossroads.

(10) Turn left, then 50 m further on turn right onto a narrow path. When you reach the tarmac, turn left, then turn right towards the church you passed on the way out.

(4) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the bridge under the D116, which you passed at the start of the walk.

(2) Continue straight ahead to the road, turn right onto it, then turn left onto the D82. Cross the bridge over the Rémarde. At the crossroads, turn slightly left, then immediately right towards the SNCF station (E).
