Description of the walk

Start : Holmridge car park, Horsley (Nearby postcode GL6 0PW) Grid ref. ST 839 980

(S/E) Follow the main road on your left and go down Hartley Bridge Hill again on the left for a few metres until you bear right to the track (bridlepath signpost). Follow this track for 650 metres.

(1) At "Kingscote Wood" signpost, take the public bridleway on your left (blue arrow) going past properties. After 500 metres on this large track, bear right to the permissive footpath which slightly goes up on your right. Go straight ahead in the woods for almost 600 metres before your sharply bear left. Go down this path a bit hidden at the beginning.

(2) At the junction with the bridleway, turn right and walk this track (can be muddy during wet conditions!) next to a stream for one kilometre. Then, past the gate, you leave Kingscote Wood entering an open meadow. Go across the meadow following arrows until you reach a driveway.

(3) Go up this road on your left for 350 metres and bear left to the arrow sign before farm buildings. Skirt the farm by the left side and continue the track which finally leads to Kingscote village.

(4) At the crossroads in the village, turn immediately left going through the kissing-gate with a yellow arrow and enter the path in Conygre Wood. At the first fork, follow the yellow arrow path on the right! At the second fork with two yellow arrows, choose the left upper path for one kilometre before it bends right next to the field (ignore the first path on your right).

(5) Descend for 200 metres, cross over the track taking the narrow path in front of you (private way on the right). At the second track bear left (again private way on the right) going down this main way and ignoring both right and left paths.

(6) Then, you join a path with a yellow arrow on the left. Ignore it and continue down your path (North-East). After 250 metres, before you reach a large track, turn sharp right (South-East).

(7) At the next junction, don't follow the yellow arrow which goes to the right but turn left! Then, after 250 metres, go across an open field before you reach a stile.

(8) Go through this stile and turn immediately left. When you have to leave the track ("Private, no public right of way" signpost), bear left to the public footpath which goes across the open meadow. Cross a bridge heading to the stile far away. Past the stile, ascend the road on your left until you join the first crossroads. Your car is in the car park on your right.(S/E)

Hi, thanks for your message. Yes we printed the map from the pdf as we prefer not to rely on mobile devices and the number symbols have a solid v shape that obscures the map somewhat. This seemed to obscure the permissive paths in particular as only shown as a fine grey dotted line. We did enjoy the walk though so thank you. Sue

Hi SueM,

Thank you for this feedback. I am sorry for the confusion. How come the numbers obscured key points on the map? Did you print the PDF ? or did you follow the route with the mobile app ?

Thank you for your support.

Happy walking 🙌🏼

Lovely walk and would recommend. Pity route numbers obscure key points on the map. Found instruction at point 6 confusing. No permissive path sign before yellow arrow and correct route at this point before the yellow arrow is a sharp turn down right. We missed this and ended up re-walking route 2 to 1!

A very pretty walk through woods. Excellent for a hot summer day as plenty of shade although when we did it, it was damp and chilly. Easy walking and took exactly the time stated, including time for a picnic. We actually started the walk from Kingscote.
