Keiservarden from Bodo

The ascent of Keiservarden is a popular hike amongst the residents of Bodø. This modest peak offers a 360° view of the town and the mountains. Since Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway inaugurated this trail, built by Sherpas, in 2016, more than 100,000 people have climbed to the summit each year. On a clear day, you can see the entire Lofoten archipelago to the north and west. To the south, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Helgeland coast, and to the east, the mountains marking the border with Sweden. The path is just wide enough for two people.

Description of the walk

Drive up Fjellveien to the Keiservarden car park, just below the Wood Hotel.

(S/E) From the car park, head north-east and follow the well-marked path towards Keiservarden.

(1) Walk along the left-hand side of the lake known as Øvre Vollvatnet.

(2) Continue straight on, keeping the lake called Svartvatnet on your right.

(3) At the northern tip of the lake, carry on straight ahead (north-east). Keep heading in this direction and follow the marked path uphill to the summit of Keiservarden.

(4) Descend via the same path to the northern tip of Svartvatnet.

(3) Turn left and walk along the lake on your right, following an unmarked path. This will take you to the south-eastern tip of the lake.

(2) Return to the signposted path taken at the start of the walk and follow it to the left back to the car park where you started (S/E).
