Huka Falls

Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, is nestled in a caldera, the remnant of a supervolcano explosion. Its outlet, the Waikato River, the longest in the country, flows through a narrow gorge only 15 m wide with an average flow of 340 m³/s, almost that of the Seine. These figures give an idea of the fury and turbulence of these beautiful turquoise waters as they plunge down a ten-metre waterfall.

Description of the walk

On the North Island, in the town of Taupo, on the lake of the same name, take Tongariro Street (north), cross the Waikato River and continue straight ahead on Wairakei Drive. At the sign for Huka Falls, turn right onto Huka Falls Road. After 2 km, turn right again onto Huka Falls Carpark.
From Rotorua, on the lake of the same name, take State Highway No. 5 (south). After 70 km, at the roundabout at the junction with State Highway No. 1, continue straight ahead on Wairakei Drive towards Taupo. After 3 km, turn left onto Huka Falls Road and 1 km further on, turn left again into Huka Falls Carpark.

(S/E) From the car park, behind the buildings, take the path to the footbridge over the Waikato River upstream from its narrowest point. From there, overlooking the raging river, you will see a view that is both frightening and fascinating.

(1) At the crossroads just after the footbridge, leave the path on the right that leads to Taupo and the one opposite, which you will return on. Take the path on the left along the river to marvel at the spectacle of the rapids. At the end, you will reach the highlight, the waterfall at the widening of the canyon where the waters are released in a thunderous explosion. Shortly afterwards, you will reach an intersection.

(2) Leave the path on the left that runs alongside the river. Follow the path on the right through the woods for about 100 metres until you reach another fork.

(3) Leave the path opposite towards Taupo. Turn right to return to point (1), cross the footbridge and return to the car park (S/E).
