Hesleden to Wingate, Way of Love

(S) From the Green (Front Street) walk south down Station road until you reach the Hart to Haswell Walkway

(1) When you reach the walkway, turn right and follow the walkway for approximately 2km.

(2) When you reach the first underpass at Castle Eden, you will see a path if you wish to stop in Castle Eden, otherwise continue along the walkway passing under the A19.

(3) Where the walkway starts to bend right (north), look for a path to your left and take the path staying on the westerly bearing. At the end of this path, turn right onto the Castle Eden Walkway.

(4) After 100m you will see a path to your left, take this path and continue onto Moor Lane past the fishing lake.

(5) At the junction of Moor Lane and Front Street, turn left and walk down Front Street to Holy Trinity Church, then continue past the Medical Centre to North East Carpets where this section ends (E).

Transport: There is on-street parking in Hesleden and behind Boots Pharmacy in Wingate near the end of the walk. Bus 206 Peterlee Purples connects the start and end of the route.

Facilities: There are no facilities on the way, however near the end of the walk, you will pass Wingate Library and Community Centre and there are some takeaways, Railway Crossings pub and Robinson's Butchers/Cafe at the end of the walk. There is also a convenience store just beyond the end of the walk.

Accessibility: The majority of this walk is on a cycle path, however the section linking the Hart to Haswell Walkway with the Castle Eden Walkway is over a field, you may need to go further up the Hart to Haswell Walkway and then back via one of the other paths to Moor Lane.

Just enjoy the scenery and visit the churches at the start and end of the walk. This is a pilgrimage route after all.
