Description of the walk

Start : Car park next to Hanna’s Close cottages, 87 Aughnahoory Rd, Kilkeel, Newry (BT34 4AH)

(S/E) From the car park walk up to its entrance and turn right (North-East) onto a green lane and continue through farmyards, walking for approximately 1 Km, where the lane meets the Ballinran Road.

(1) Turn left (South-West) and continue for 0.5 Km along a country road until the Ballinran Crossroads (the four roads).

(2) Turn left (South) into the Aughnahoory Road and follow this back to Hanna’s Close cottages. (S/E)

Lough Shannagh walk leads up hill on the ‘Banns Road’, an off road farm track. The route circles Lough Shannagh (in an anti-clockwise direction) with a high point of 587m at Carn Mountain. It also follows and crosses the Mourne Wall on places. A track locally known as the Banns Road leads to the hills.
