Description of the walk

Start : Main car park reached through the gates on the Head Road on the south side of the Mournes. (BT34 4HU). Stone way-markers are in place to help guide you. Follow the red arrows for the Ben Crom walk.

(S/E) From the main car park, walk North and take the road towards the Reservoir.

(1) After 810m, this linear route guides you alongside the Silent Valley Reservoir.

(2) Pass the exit of the Binnian Tunnel and other reminders of the feat of engineering required to help fulfill the water needs of Belfast. Continue following the path around the Eastern edge of the reservoir. The path then turns North-East away from the Silent Valley Reservoir to the Ben Crom Reservoir.

(3) The walk turns at the foot of Ben Crom dam wall. Retrace your steps back down the valley to the main car park. (S/E)

Driving to start : The route begins in the main car park reached through the gates on the Head Road on the south side of the Mournes. The Silent Valley is sign posted for drivers travelling south from Newcastle and north from Kilkeel. There is an entrance fee.

Parking : Silent Valley Mountain Park, Head Rd, Ballymartin, Newry (BT34 4PU)

Terrain : Easy well laid paths

Public Transport : Translink

Facilities : Toilets and refreshments are available during summer months and public holidays at Silent Valley restaurant and information centre or in nearby Kilkeel.

Dog Policy : Must be kept on a lead.

Worth a visit

The Silent Valley Reservoir is a reservoir located in the Mourne Mountains near Kilkeel, County Down in Northern Ireland. It supplies most of the water for County Down, surrounding counties and most of Belfast. It is owned and maintained by Northern Ireland Water Limited (formerly DRD Water Service). The reservoir was built between 1923 and 1933 by a workforce of over 1,000 men, nine of whom died during construction.

Ben Crom Reservoir is a reservoir located in the Mourne Mountains near Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. Along with Silent Valley Reservoir, which is situated further down the Kilkeel River valley, it supplies water for County Down, surrounding counties and most of Belfast. It was constructed between 1953 and 1957, as the final part of the Mourne scheme to provide water to Belfast which started with the passing of the Belfast Water Act in 1893.
