Description of the walk

Start : car park next to Eden Millenium Monument. Grid ref. NY 520 282

(S) From the car park, walk along the grass verge North-West handrailing the wall on your right-hand side. As you reach a wooden gate on your right, you can take a detour here to visit "Mayburgh Henge" (no dogs are allowed). Otherwise, carry straight along the minor road walking on the grass verge.

(1) Just past "Southwaite Green Cottages" house turn right at the wooden waypost towards Eamont Bridge. Walk along the grassy footpath between gardens handrailing fields. Cross a wooden gate and carry straight on walking slightly downhill as the path bears right.

(2) Cross another wooden gate then turn right along a farm track. You are now handrailing the River Eamont on your left-hand side. As you reach houses, keep walking towards the bridge. The road bears right and you reach a busy road (A6) at the end of the bridge. Cross straight ahead carefully to take the footbridge that goes left, parallel to the bridge over the river. At the end of the footbridge, turn right and walk East with the river this time on your right-hand side.

(3) When you reach Low Mill house, take the stile on its left. Walk through some woods. The path bears right keeping the house on your right hand. As you exit the woods, cross a stile and keep walking straight ahead (East) across the field keeping the river on your right. (All dogs are to be on lead if livestock is in the field). Walk along the riverside.

(4) After 770 m or so, find a double gate to go over the Beck via a footbridge. Then after another 500 m cross a wooden stile. You can now spot a castle in front of you. Keep walking along the riverside as it curves along its meander, then walk away from it (North-East) to reach a gate to a car park.

(5) Turn right along the car park and road. At the road junction turn right down the road. Keep walking towards the bridge as the road curves right so you can enjoy a view of the castle. You can either cross the bridge and go to visit the castle or turn back the same way to your car (E).

It was a lovely day when we walked this route. There was plenty to see and although the M6 motorway noise was there most of the time, it didn’t spoil the experience. Brougham Castle was very interesting. Would do it again.
