Start: Dunmallard car park, Pooley Bridge (CA11 0LL) Grid ref. NY 469 244
(S/E) With your back to the bridge, take the footpath handrailing the woods above the car park towards "Soulby".
As you enter the trees, at the Y-junction keep straight ahead (North-East) on the bridleway down with the river on your right. Keep walking along the riverside while crossing a wooden gate.
After 480m or so, walk left (North-West), away from the riverbank around the hill on your left. You are now handrail a fence on your right-hand side as you go uphill.
(2) After 120m, find a wooden gate right to cross then keep left to now handrail the fence on your left hand as you carry on North-West. When the fence becomes a wall, take the wooden gate left. Walk across the field Southward to reach another wooden gate located in the edge in front of you.
(3) Cross the wooden gate and carry straight on uphill (South) toward the wooden gate at the edge of the woodland in front of you. At the gate, turn back to enjoy the view of the countryside before you carry on.
At the wooden waypost, turn right (West) along the permissive path. Then at the Y-junction you can make a detour left up the hill to visit an "old settlement" and Dunmallard Hill or turn right downhill to go around it. As you walk around enjoy views of Ullswater lake on your right. Keep going downhill towards the lake.
(4) As you reach a path junction with a wooden waypost, turn left towards Pooley Bridge. Walk East with the loch on your right hand and keep walking on the same path as you reach back Dunmallard car park. (S/E)
