Description of the walk

(S) The starting point is the car park at the Roman wine press opposite Erden. About 50 m to the west, the so-called “Erdener Treppchen” begins with a steep climb. We follow the yellow route to the tarmac road.

(1) Here, we turn left and go up a flight of steps. After about 235 m, we come to a junction. Here, we turn left and head slightly downhill. After about 340 m, there is a junction to the right. Here, we follow the yellow markings for another 80 m or so. At the next junction, we leave the yellow-marked climbing path to the left and continue climbing up the hill until we reach the end of a farm track.

(2) Here we turn right and continue along a mountain path. After about 220 m we take a sharp left and, after 140 m, reach a junction with a rest area.

(3) Here, we turn right onto the Moselsteig, which we now follow. At the first opportunity, we turn right onto a path. Soon we reach a wide track, onto which we turn right. At the next junction, where a tarmac road begins, we turn left

(4) We follow the gravel path until we reach a fork, where we follow the Moselsteig to the left again.

(5) We now continue straight ahead on the Moselsteig until, via a short path, we descend steeply through the vineyard onto another gravel track. After a while, the path curves left and heads uphill again, passing two junctions. At the third junction, we turn left and after a few metres we cross a road.

(6) After crossing the road, we turn right twice. Down in the valley we can see Kinheim. After about 650 m we have to turn left again.

(7) We now head north for a few metres until the first opportunity to turn right. The path curves to the right, at the end of which it forks. Here we turn left onto a path until we reach the next crossroads.

(8) Here we turn right. After a left-hand bend, we head up to the left at the next junction. After a while, we come to a fork, which we follow to the left, still on the Moselsteig. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead until the next junction.

(9) We are now high above Kröv; we leave the Moselsteig to the right and take the shortest route down through the vineyard to the village.

(10) At Bergstraße, we turn right and continue downhill. Keep going straight on until the point where Bergstraße bends to the right. At the end of the bend, we go straight onto Schulpfad and, after a few metres, reach our destination on the right-hand side (car park at the school) (E).

Notes

Sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. Sturdy footwear and walking poles are recommended. The first section includes a few climbing sections. There are plenty of places to rest along the way, as well as a few shelters. In clear weather, I recommend bringing a pair of binoculars. There are several vantage points. In the summer months, it can get very warm in the Weinbergergen. You should therefore ensure you have adequate sun protection.

I have documented this hike with more photos on my personal blog.

Worth a visit

Most of the towns along the Moselle are very picturesque and offer places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation. There are many vantage points and places of interest along the Moselle.
