Description of the walk

Departure from Riva degli Schiavoni, not far from the Victor Emmanuel II statue.

(S/E) Head east, keeping the Grand Canal on your right. After about 60 metres, turn left and go up Calle de la Pescaria. At the intersection, turn right into Calle Crosera, then immediately left into Calle Morosina. Take the first left, Calle Erizzo. Ignore two narrow streets on the right and take the Erizzo Bridge.

On the other side, turn right and follow the canal on your right. After about 30 metres, turn left onto Ramo Primo della Pegola. At the end, turn left and then right onto Ramo Secondo della Pegola. Turn immediately left. You will come to a square, Campo dell'Arsenal, and continue until you reach the junction between two canals (sculpture of the Lion of Piraeus). Then turn left onto Fondamenta dei Arsenalotti and follow a small canal on your right. Ignore a bridge on your right and you will immediately come to Ponte Sorto.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Rio de la Ca' en Duo. On the other side, turn right. Then take Calle del Pestrin on the left. At the crossroads, turn right onto Calle Crosera. You will come to a square, Campo Bandiera e Moro, and go around it clockwise (note the Gothic church Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni immediately on your left).

Take the Sant'Antonin exit and turn left at the corner of a restaurant. Go up Salizada Sant'Antonin and turn left to walk alongside the church of the same name on your right. Continue until you reach Ponte Sant'Antonin.

(2) Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead along Salizada dei Greci. At the junction with Calle del Magazen (on the right), Campiello de la Fraterna, turn left. Cross the Ponte dei Greci and immediately take a small bridge on the left. On the other side, turn right and follow the canal on your right. Ignore two bridges on the right and turn slightly left to reach a small square, Campo San Provolo.

(3) Then turn left and right to follow Corte Nova. Turn right onto this street and immediately left onto Calle del Vin. This will take you to the quay called Riva degli Schiavoni, on the edge of the Grand Canal.

(4) Follow the quay on the right. Take the Ponte del Vin, then the Ponte della Paglia (note the famous Bridge of Sighs on the right). Walk along the Doge's Palace on your right and turn right at the corner to reach St. Mark's Square, with the basilica of the same name and the bell tower.

(5) Turn immediately left towards the Archaeological Museum. Leave the bell tower on your right and walk along the Correr Museum on your left. At the end, turn right and then left to pass under the arches. On the other side, follow the Calle Larga dell'Ascensione on your right. At the end, turn right and then left to take the Quai Fondamenta Orseolo, along the edge of the Bacino Orseolo. Follow the canal on your right.

(6) At the end of the quay, take the Ponte Goldoni. On the other side, go straight ahead, then turn left and right to follow Calle Goldoni. Come out onto Campo San Luca, turn left and exit via Salizzada San Luca. Then turn right into Calle Corner Piscopia. At the end of the street, follow Riva del Carbon on your right and walk along the Grand Canal on your left. Cross the Ponte Manin bridge over a small perpendicular canal.

(7) Shortly afterwards, turn right into Calle Larga Mazzini. At Campo San Salvador (church of the same name on the left), turn left onto Marzarieta Due Aprile. Take the first right, Calle dei Stragneri or Calle della Fava. At the end, take the Ponte della Fava to reach Campo della Fava (Santa Maria della Fava church opposite).

Then turn left and right. Take the first left, Calle de la Fava, then the first right, Calle Larga. At the end, follow Calle del Cafetier to the left, which soon turns slightly to the right. You will arrive at the foot of the Church of San Lio.

(8) Then follow Salizada San Lio to the right. Ignore the first three streets on the left and take the fourth, Calle del Paradisio. At the end, take the Ponte Paradisio. On the other side, turn right and immediately take another bridge. Take the first left and you will come to Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

Walk clockwise halfway around the square. Leave the church on your left and take the Ponte de Ruga Giuffa. Go straight ahead, then turn left onto Calle de Mezo. Continue straight ahead and, at the end of the street, take the Ponte Novo.

(9) On the other side, turn right and then left to follow Borgoloco San Lorenzo. At the end, turn right and then left to take Ponte San Lorenzo. You will arrive at Campo San Lorenzo with the church of the same name opposite. At the fountain, turn right onto Calle San Lorenzo. The street turns left and leads to a quay.

First turn left to reach the Ponte de la Corte Nova. Retrace your steps, pass the previous intersection and follow the canal on your left. Take the first bridge on the left, the Ponte de la Comenda. On the other side, turn right and continue straight ahead until you reach the Ponte Sant'Antonin.

(2) Cross the bridge and follow the same route you took at the start of the tour until you reach Campo San Provolo (refer to the first reference at point (2) in the description).

At the corner of the basilica, turn left to reach Piazza San Marco, at the foot of the bell tower.

Notes

This walk takes place entirely in the urban environment of Venice. Here are a few things to consider when planning your visit:

  • Suitable footwear: the route takes you along many cobbled streets (calli) and crosses numerous bridges with steps. It is essential to wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for this type of surface and terrain.
  • Hydration: especially in hot weather, remember to bring water with you. There are public fountains (fontanelle) where you can fill your water bottle, but it is advisable to start with a sufficient supply.
  • Crowds: the route passes through very busy areas such as the Riva degli Schiavoni, St. Mark's Square and the Rialto district. Expect to encounter large numbers of people, which may slow down progress, especially at peak times.
  • Acqua Alta: depending on the season and weather conditions (particularly in autumn and winter), some parts of the route, including St. Mark's Square and Riva degli Schiavoni, may be affected by acqua alta (high water). Check the tide forecast if you are travelling during these periods.
  • Optional visits: your itinerary passes near the Archaeological Museum of Venice and the Grimani Palace. If you wish to visit them, remember to check their opening days and times in advance, as well as any requirements for booking or purchasing tickets online.
  • Food and drink: the route passes through areas where you will easily find bars, bacari (cicchetti bars, Venetian tapas bars) and restaurants where you can take a break or enjoy a meal.
