From Tuchan to Padern – Return via Pech des Fayssettes

A long hike starting from the vineyards of Tuchan, passing through the very pretty Chemin Cathare orGR®367. A beautiful finish at the foot of Padern Castle. This is followed by a climb up the Montagne de Tau via theGR®36A, before turning towards the Pech des Fayssettes. Then, a steep descent through old, abandoned pastures to reach the vineyards and Tuchan.
It is entirely possible to do the hike in the opposite direction, heading straight up to Pech des Fayssettes.
Please note: from (5) to (11), theGR®36Ais actually a fairly narrow track and very stony in places.
Please note:the GR®367(Cathar Trail) andGRP® are diverted from (3) until the end of November 2024.

Description of the walk

Parking in the centre of the village of Tuchan, Grand Rue, near the town hall.

(S/E) Walk round the village centre following the one-way traffic flow.

Red and white markingsGR®367Cathar Trail andGRP® Tour des Fenouillèdes.

(1) Head due south towards Paziols and Padern via Rue du Pont (D611) to reach the edge of the cemetery.

(2) Turn right at a steel vehicle barrier to walk along the northern side of the cemetery, following the Ancien Chemin de Padern. Continue along this beautiful path through the vineyards.
''Beautiful scenery all the way''.
Join the D14 and follow it to the right for about 300 m until you reach a track on the right at elevation 196, opposite a ruin marked with a red and white ‘turn right’ sign.

(3) See introduction: route diverted until the end of November 2024. Turn right, north-west, and climb slightly. The track then heads south-west and, after about 400 m, the route ofthe GR®367andGRP® is altered on the ground to bypass a vineyard plot and reaches elevation 223. IGN base map incorrect.
The path reaches a rocky area. At Col des Moulins, the path turns north-west, above the D14, and enters the gorge before eventually joining this road. It is advisable to cross the road at this point where visibility is good and follow it to the right, keeping to the left-hand side, facing the infrequent traffic.

(4) Without crossing the road bridge over the Verdouble, continue straight ahead along a grassy track.
''After 100 m, on the left, flows the Source du Parazol, where you can top up your water supply.'' Continue along this track, keeping a safe distance from the Verdouble. You will come to a tarmac section before reaching the junction ofthe GR®36Awith theGR®367.
''Possible climb to Padern on the left, with a picnic area, toilets, drinking water, café, etc. Very beautiful view of the castle and the village’'.

Red and whiteGR® 36Amarkings are intermittently absent at the track junctions, which have been re-routed.

(5) Continue straight ahead along this small road, now following theGR®36A. Pass the road bridge and thePR® on the left. Turn right, walk alongside the cemetery and climb up to the left along a path, then join a track.

(6) Take care. Turn sharply right onto this concrete track until you reach the renovated farmhouse. You will then need to follow this track for a very long time. Beautiful scenery.

(7) At this track junction, turn right.

(8) At this track junction, at elevation 427, turn right again. After this long climb, you’ll reach the ruins at Camp Extrémié, which was the furthest inhabited and grazed area.

(9) Follow the track down towards the Ruisseau des Nauquets and cross it. The track has since been extended.

(10) Continue along this new track, climbing and leaving theGR® for 200 m. Then continue up a steep climb through the Brugue forest. Much higher up, the track levels out and joins the old, overgrown track, finally reaching a junction with aPR® on the right in an open area. View due west, over the antennas and wind turbines of Pech de Fraysse. A lovely spot for a break.

Yellow markings in poor condition, sparse but present.

(11) Turn sharply right onto a grassy track. Then continue left, up the other sunny slope. Pass an abandoned paragliding area and reach the Pech des Fayssettes area.

(12) After walking a few dozen metres through the low vegetation: a very beautiful landscape.
Then turn sharply left, north-east, along a very rough, stony track. Take care: when this track levels out, look for a barely marked path starting on the right.

(13) Descend to the right along a very steep and rugged path through abandoned pastures, following a ridge. Much further down, reach the Caune d’Ander in the valley.

(14) Cross the stream, which is often dry, and follow it along the right bank. Cross it again further down and you’ll come to some vineyards to go round, keeping an eye out for the old yellow markings. You’ll reach a small tarmac road with a picnic area on the right.

(15) Continue left, walking close to the fences alongside the vineyard plots.

(16) Two options at this point:
- the simplest option without GPS: turn right onto this small road, walk past the cemetery and join the D611 and theGR®367. Follow it to the left and reach the car park.
- Follow these directions: use GPS to avoid entering the vineyard plots. First turn right then left, cross the ford and head slightly uphill. Further on, join a track through the vineyards.

(17) Follow it to the right, heading down towards the ugly new buildings of the winery. Cross the Ruisseau des Nouyès. Join Rue des Clapies.

(18) Cross it and head opposite to follow the stream on your right. After 30 m, first turn right then left and pass between high stone walls to finally emerge onto Grand Rue after passing under a porch.

(1) Turn left against the flow of traffic and head for the car park near the town hall (S/E).

Notes

This is a low-mountain area. You will need: rain gear, water, snacks, GPX track, route description, map, GPS or Visorando app, camera, good walking boots, a walking stick. A windbreaker is strongly recommended in this windy region.

This hike can be done all year round. Be aware of potential hunting activities: if there is no ban on access, indicated by temporary signs => wear brightly coloured clothing or a high-visibility jacket.
This hike can be done in the opposite direction by heading straight up to Pech des Fayssettes (12).
This hike has a total elevation gain of around 740 m.

From (13) to (15), the descent is very steep; take extra care in wet weather.
At (16), for those without Visorando guidance or a GPS, turn right onto the small road.

Toilets and drinking water at (S/E): the school-town hall on Rue de la République in Tuchan, and also in Padern near the town hall (D14) after crossing the ford over the Verdouble.

So I went on this hike on 27 September, and on several occasions the markings and/or signposting were problematic.
Opposite the ruins, there is a path, but after less than 100 metres a Yellow Cross is clearly visible. I decided I wasn’t going to continue along the road, so I carried on along this path. There was indeed a sign indicating a diversion from 30 September, which didn’t apply to me as I was doing this hike on the 27th. Having gone round the vineyard as indicated in the description, I assumed I was on the right route. And in any case, I came across the red and white markings again, as well as the yellow ones.
Once in Padern, and after climbing up to the castle, I rejoined the GR 367 from the bottom of the village. If I hadn’t come across a couple of hikers who pointed me in the right direction, I would probably have missed the junction of the GR®367 with the GR®36A. There is indeed a paint mark on the side at the junction, but no sign indicating the direction for Mont Tauch...
So I carried on for quite a while along this well-marked path past the cemetery until I reached a junction (probably point 7 in the route description?). And as I wanted to climb Mont Tauch, I turned left. At first, there were red and white markings, but these quickly disappeared. So I walked through a forest for a good 45 minutes along a clearly visible path but with no signposts at all, before reaching a plateau, only to find myself at the foot of the telecommunications tower and the wind turbines. And I was rather surprised to find the red and white markings there!
I didn’t climb to the summit because it was starting to rain, everything was shrouded in mist and a very strong wind was blowing! So I descended a little further down to a small hilltop (whose name I couldn’t manage to find) where there was also a low telecommunications tower. From there, I followed the path to rejoin the route described in the original guide, with views of Tuchan and the somewhat tricky crossing of the pastures, then the vineyards, before reaching the cooperative winery and its huge vats...
A lovely walk in a wild setting amidst the stunning landscapes of the Corbières!

Whilst harvesting grapes in the Hautes-Corbières at the end of September 2024, and making the most of a day off, I went for this lovely hike.
So I set off from Tuchan to head for Padern via the GR 367 and climb up to its castle before tackling the ascent to Mont Tauch. When I reached the fork in the track (number 7 on the route description), I turned left. At first there were yellow signposts, but I soon found myself with no landmarks. I climbed a bit at random before reaching a sort of large grassy plateau. I eventually found myself at the foot of Mont Tauch, where the telecommunications tower and the wind turbines were shrouded in fog. I descended to another telecommunications tower a little further down, following the red and white markings. An icy, gale-force wind, mist and a few drops of rain... Breathtaking views from this spot, as the mist had finally cleared!
The descent to Tuchan after the end of the stony track through the pastures is not the easiest, to say the least! You really need to spot the rocky patches to avoid having to trudge through the heath...
Apart from a couple I met on the GR 367 just before Padern, I didn’t come across any other hikers! Beautiful scenery, wild nature, but a mad wind almost the whole way!
In total, nearly 9 hours, over 20 km and 850 metres of elevation gain.

A magnificent circular hike (which took me 4 hours and 45 minutes to complete). The view from the summit is superb. The first section offers a pleasant stroll to Padern. After that, it climbs gradually.
It’s at point 10 that things get tough: it’s a steep climb! But it’s worth persevering to enjoy the view that awaits you. Personally, it was the descent that gave me the most trouble because of a sore knee that really suffered on this very steep and abrupt slope (be careful, the start of the path on the right is hard to spot).
Take your time and watch your step!
If you’re doing this route in bright sunshine like I did, a hat is essential and you’ll need at least 2 litres of water per person. It’s also worth noting that hikes in the area aren’t really recommended for people who are afraid of insects: the cicadas fly all over the place and keep smashing into your forehead )
I had a brilliant morning. Thanks to the person who mapped out the route!

Thank you for this wonderful route; it was certainly challenging, but the effort was more than rewarded by the magnificent views.
We added the climb to Padern Castle and the ascent to the mast and the orientation table, bringing the total to 23 km with 800 m of elevation gain.
