From Port-Louis to Pointe Sable de Bar

A pleasant walk between the sea and the mangroves in an idyllic setting. The sea is like a lake as you are near the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. The path leads to several lovely little beaches. Mangroves are present throughout the route, along with other tropical species. Upon arrival on the other side of Pointe Sable de Bar, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the former Beautiran sugar cane loading port and the Petit-Canal dock. A long but easy walk.

Description of the walk

Start at the car park at Port-Louis harbour.

(S/E) Head south and follow the sea on your right.

(1) Cross the Ravine de la Vidange: a tree trunk may allow you to cross without getting wet, but you may still get your feet wet... Continue south between the sea and a marshy area.

(2) Pass a beach where you can swim and continue between the sea and the mangroves. You’ll reach a small beach with tables (boats and jet skis bring people here on Sundays and public holidays).

(3) Continue along the coastal path.

(4) From here, the path is overgrown: you must either walk on the sand or find a way through the bushes. Pass Pointe Dable de Bar and reach a viewpoint overlooking the old Beautiran sugar cane port on the other side of the water. You are now in the mangrove forest and the site is very beautiful.

(5) The return journey follows the same route back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Swimwear recommended. Remember to bring plenty of water as it is often sunny. You can have a picnic anywhere along the route. The coastal woodland provides plenty of shade, which is very pleasant. Towards the end of the route, just before Pointe Sable de Bar, the path is no longer visible as it is rarely used and overgrown with grass: you will need to find a way through or walk along the beach.

Worth a visit

From the car park, you can walk northwards to find a lovely, quiet beach just beyond the port of Port-Louis. It’s a pleasant spot for a swim. Few people go there as the best-known beach is the one in the town centre at the northern end of the town.

A lovely walk to explore the mangroves. I set off early, so there was no one around... But from 10.30 am onwards, it’s a different story: swimmers, jet skis, speedboats blasting music...
I can confirm that there is rubbish along the first kilometre (which is a shame), and it’s true that after a few kilometres, it gets a bit monotonous... But it’s so beautiful!
Note that you can no longer reach Pointe Sable de Bar because ‘the forest is regenerating’, so the path is impassable. This shortens the walk by a kilometre...

To be honest, we didn’t walk the whole way.
We found it disappointing, as it was very monotonous, with just a few small beaches, but otherwise it was always through the trees.
Few animals apart from a hermit crab and a few pelicans around the fishermen on their way back

It takes a bit of a search to find the start
There’s a lot of rubbish along the first kilometre. A shame.
The walk is nice as I’m practically on my own. The end must be done with my feet in the water.

A lovely walk between the sea and the mangroves, very easy, and there’s plenty of shade. There are a few boats bringing tourists to the beach at the end, but it’s still not very busy. The path becomes a bit difficult to walk on towards the end; I’m not sure we actually made it all the way... The length of the route is slightly underestimated: it’s more like 10 km

It was impossible to complete the hike, as the path was completely impassable for the last 800 metres.
