Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Clamart station.
- Transilien - Line N, between Paris-Montparnasse and Versailles-Chantiers.
Take the only exit at the end of a long footbridge over the Grand Paris metro construction site.

No signage

(S) Upon exiting the station, take the underground passage towards Rue du Chemin Vert. At the exit, follow this street to the left towards Fort d'Issy. Cross Rue Barbès on the right-hand side and, at the next traffic lights, continue straight ahead.

Cross Rue Claude Bernard on the right-hand side and, at the next intersection, turn right onto Rue du Dr Zamenhoff. At the triangular crossroads, turn right onto Rue du Général Guichard. Enter the grounds of Fort d'Issy and you will immediately come to a roundabout.

(1) Take the cement path on the right, which runs parallel to a street called Promenade du Verger. After a left turn, climb the stairs on the right. Walk between a swimming pool on your left and the fort's surrounding wall on your right. After passing the swimming pool, turn left into the Japanese garden. Cross this small garden and turn left at the exit.

After about 20 metres, take a concrete path that branches off to the right at the foot of some buildings (signposted "Voie pompiers"). At a fork, turn left towards the Louise Michel school.

(2) Just after the "Allée du Puits" sign, turn right into Square du Fort. Pass a playground on your right and turn left to leave the square. Continue straight ahead. At the T-junction, turn right and, immediately, at the corner of a bookshop, turn right under a porch.

You will come out onto an esplanade. Turn left. Cross the esplanade and then a street, and go around the left side of a slab with seasonal water jets. At the end, turn right onto a gravel path along the fort's enclosure (fence).

At the T-junction, follow Chemin du Colonel Arnaud Beltrame (chicane) to the left. Walk along the fort's walls and note the view of the Eiffel Tower on the left. Ignore the path on the left that crosses a garden and, a little further on, go down the stairs on the right. At the bottom, turn left and go under the arcades to leave the fort.

(3) Go straight ahead and take a cement path parallel to the street on its right-hand side. At the traffic lights, cross the avenue and continue straight ahead on Rue du Fort. Pass a cul-de-sac on the left and take the next left, Rue de la Galerie.

At the corner of No. 10, turn left onto a narrow path. After the path curves right and then left, ignore an alley on the right. Then ignore a path on the left (dead end) and go downhill.

At the end, turn right. At the traffic lights, go around the roundabout on the right and take thethird right, Rue de l'Abbé Grégoire. At No. 15, turn left onto Rue de la Glacière. At the end, go down a flight of steps and turn left. At the traffic lights, continue straight ahead into Rue Émile Zola. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead into Rue Maximilien Robespierre and walk slightly uphill for about 100 metres.

Yellow markings

(4) Turn right into Square Henri Barbusse and immediately follow the wide, tree-lined Allée Lecache to the left. On the left-hand side, you will pass an educational farm, a monumental staircase, a large bandstand and a basketball court. Continue along a narrower path. At a fork (with a sculpture of a cow on the left-hand side), turn left and walk slightly uphill.

Leave the park and turn right onto a downhill street (Rue de la Défense on the map; note the steep stairs on the right-hand side leading to houses). Walk past the memorial to the 1915 Armenian genocide and you will come to a crossroads (traffic lights).

(5) Then follow Boulevard Rodin to the left. Just before a bus stop, go up a ramp on the left to access Parc Rodin. Leave the yellow markers behind for a moment and ignore the stairs on the left to continue straight ahead along a path overlooking the boulevard. When you reach a basketball court on the left, go down the stairs on the right and rejoin the markers. At the bottom, cross at the pedestrian crossing, turn left and walk up the boulevard.

At the corner of No. 86, go down Allée du Panorama, which is a series of steps. At the first crossroads, take Allée de l'Union on the left (ignore the signposting that invites you to continue straight ahead; two differentPR® routes pass here).

Enter the Issy Botanical Garden and continue straight ahead. Just after the toilets on the right-hand side, turn sharply left and leave a small pond on your left. Go up a hairpin bend to the right and, at the crossroads (bench), turn left and continue uphill. At the top, leave the garden, turn right and follow Boulevard Rodin again (panorama on the right).

(6) At the bend in the boulevard, at the corner of No. 139, turn right onto Sentier des Pucelles. Cross a street on the left and continue straight ahead along a path between two walls. At the corner of the left-hand wall, climb a staircase on the left. You will come out onto a small square (Rue de Percy) and take a gravel path on the right. Pass a gate on the left, continue along the gravel path and go around the Rodin Museum on the right.

Cross another street on the left and continue straight ahead along Sentier des Mauduits (path between walls and fences). Ignore a path on the left and go down a staircase that turns right. At the bottom, go down a tarmac path on the left and you will come to the entrance to a tunnel that passes under the railway tracks.

Then turn right at an acute angle onto a downhill street. Just before a 30km/h speed limit sign, turn left onto a path that passes under a railway viaduct. At the end, turn left towards another viaduct (the RER C and Transilien N lines cross here).

There is a slight inaccuracy in (7), our favourite author must have skipped a line! On Rue des Lampes, turn left, and at the end turn right (Rue des Sorrières) to find the gravel path on the left (Allée des Hautes Sorrières), which we searched for in vain further down!

(7) After a few metres, take the first pedestrian crossing on the right to cross Rue de Paris, and climb the stairs opposite. Continue along a gravel lane. At the end, cross Rue Robert Julien Lanen and take Rue des Lampes opposite. After about 50 metres, climb a flight of steps on the left and follow a tarmac path (Sentier des Hautes Terres). At the end, first turn right then left onto a gravel path (Allée des Hautes Sorrières, a private road but where pedestrians are allowed).

At the end, leave the yellow markings for a moment and turn right (contrary to the arrow). You will come to a viewpoint overlooking Paris and turn sharply left into Rue Hédouin.

After No. 6, turn left onto Sentier des Blancs and follow the markings. Climb up and, at the top of the path, you will find Rue Hédouin again. Follow it to the left, cross Rue Alexandre Guilmant and you will find Meudon station on your right (E).

To return home:
- Transilien - Line N, towards Paris-Montparnasse or Versailles-Chantiers then Rambouillet, Dreux or Mantes-la-Jolie.

Train timetables: consult the Transilien website.

Good trainers are sufficient for this hike.

No water sources identified. Bars and shops in Fort d'Issy, between (2) and (3), and near Meudon station (E).

From (4), the yellow markings are very good (as of 2018). As the route before (4) is not marked, a detailed map is essential (at least the one accompanying this description).

Opening hours of public parks:
Fort d'Issy Japanese Garden:

Alternative route for returning by tram (Meudon-sur-Seine station, line T2):
Shortly before Meudon station, at the intersection of Rue Hédouin and Sentier des Blancs, turn right onto the latter. Go down a series of steps and join Boulevard Anatole France. Turn left and continue down this boulevard. Ignore a yellow arrow inviting you to turn right into Parc des Montalets and continue down the boulevard. At the bottom, pass under a building and you will come out on Route des Gardes. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, take the stairs opposite that lead to the old station, now converted into a restaurant, then take the stairs on the left that lead to the Meudon-sur-Seine tram station.

This hike has been completed three times by the author, with various variations, the first on 21 August 2016 and the last on 8 March 2019.

Worth a visit

- Former Fort d'Issy. Built in 1842, badly damaged during the siege of Paris in 1870-1871, it was completely refurbished in 2009-2012 to accommodate residential buildings with original architecture.

- Memorial to the Armenian genocide of 1915, inaugurated in 1982, Rue de la Défense, shortly before (5).

- Rodin Museum in Meudon.

- Panoramic views of the Seine and its islands, the lower parts of Meudon, Issy-les-Moulineaux and Boulogne-Billancourt, with Mont Valérien and the La Défense district in the distance.

- Paths and stairways in Meudon, large and beautiful houses, between (6) and (E).

- Meudon railway viaduct (7). This was the first railway viaduct built in France: inaugurated in 1840, it enabled the opening of the second railway line in France, between Paris and Versailles. Today, the Transilien N line runs over it (between Paris-Montparnasse and Versailles-Chantiers) and the RER C line passes underneath it.

We are familiar with this area, but we discovered some interesting viewpoints.
A fairly natural route through urbanised neighbourhoods
We made the return journey by train for the price of a metro ticket in just a few minutes, which was very pleasant.
The route passes under the Rodin Museum in Meudon. It's a little-known place, but very interesting for those who don't know it.

Route completed on Monday, 6 October 2025.
An easy hike that allows you to explore an urban environment, passing through parks. The whole experience is very pleasant. The route was completed using the GPX itinerary on a smartphone: no difficulty whatsoever.

It allowed us to get to know our region better. Some interesting passages, points of view.
Quite a few park routes. Description matches the route. No chance of getting lost.

I set off from Arcueil to complete the three suggested walks to Meudon station. The route is very well described. In total, it passes through nine parks, three gardens and the Bois de Clamart. Most of the urban sections avoid traffic. Overall, it's quite a surprising route, given that we are very close to Paris.

An easy urban route, fairly uneven: some interesting spots (the Fort d'Issy and its eco-neighbourhood reminiscent of the Cité Radieusehttps://www.visorando.com/images/smileys/ etc. the Rodin Museum in Meudon, views of Paris), some excellent (the Montezy trail, which you walk downhill...), and others less so (the lower part of Issy along Boulevard Rodin). But overall, it's a lovely walk.
Excellent documentation.

Hello Kla,

Thank you for your comments (about this hike and the others)!

You're absolutely right, after point (7), a sentence was left out... An error that slipped through the net... I've just corrected it.

A superb hike that takes us through parks and gardens, leading us along unexpected little paths to stunning panoramic views.
There is a slight inaccuracy at (7), our favourite author must have skipped a line! On Rue des Lampes, turn left onto a tarmac path preceded by a few steps (the Hautes Terres path), and at the end turn right (Rue des Sorrières) to find the gravel path on the left (Allée des Hautes Sorrières), which we searched for in vain further down!
This omission is inconsequential: the very precise route allows you to follow the hiking trail without hesitation.
To avoid passing through Montparnasse SNCF station,
- you can start the hike at the "Corentin Celton" metro station on Line 12 and reach Clamart station either by a short walk (less than 2 km) or by taking the 394 bus from the metro exit to Clamart station;
- for the return journey, the Meudon Val Fleury RER station is less than 1 km away, all downhill from the Meudon SNCF station.

A wonderful walk through Issy, from the new neighbourhoods along the Seine and the town centre to the hillsides with their picturesque stairways and country paths, all enhanced by magnificent views of Paris, Mont Valérien, La Défense and the north of Hauts-de-Seine.

Please note that until the end of 2018, the passage between the media library and Rue Hoche is closed for works. You will need to take a detour via Rue Diderot, making sure to turn left onto Rue Hoche at the end of the pedestrian walkway that is under construction. (When you print the map, the pictogram for marker 2 covers this part of the route, which misled me.)
At point 3, access to Square Henri Barbusse from Rue Robespierre is closed. You must use the access located below at the intersection of Rue Lasserre and Rue Tariel. (When exiting Rue E. Zola, instead of continuing straight ahead, turn right onto Rue Lasserre, then take the first left where the entrance to the square is located).
At point 6, the private gravel path is not on Rue des Lampes but on Rue des Sorrières; a left-right turn is missing somewhere in the description.

This hike is a great complement to the "Bellevue and the hillsides of Meudon" hike. I enjoyed the panoramic views and the paths, which are such a change from the main roads.
