Ask to be dropped off at the end of the road that runs along the coast just outside Agia Pelagia, where the tarmac ends and a dirt track begins.
(S) Follow the path to reach a beach that separates a small salt lake from the sea. Enjoy the view of the stunning start of the steep gorges leading to the fortified town of Paleochora (the island’s former capital), which is an absolute must-visit.
(1) The start of the path is at the other end of the beach, where you’ll need to use your hands for a few metres to begin the climb.
(2) Pass behind the ruins of an old sheepfold. The path is sometimes a little overgrown but is always fairly easy to find. You’ll come to a track.
(3) Take the track on the right at the junction and climb until you reach another track.
(4) Continue left along this track and reach an old shepherds’ hamlet.
(5) Follow the path to the highest point of the walk, where you’ll find another old hamlet (Maevavika): admire the ruins with their characteristic architecture.
(6) Continue to the next junction.
(7) Take the path on the left and pass by some more ruins. The path on the descent is very stony: watch your step.
(8) When you reach the sea, admire the crystal-clear waters of a small cove. Continue along the path, which isn’t very obvious but goes straight on and climbs slightly up a hill. Finally, the path descends towards the harbour and arrives at the beach in Diakofti (E).
