Crom - Newtownbutler

Start : Crom Visitor Centre National Trust (BT92 8AP) on the Newtownbutler-Crom road.

(S/E) From the car park, turn left onto the main drive walking past the holiday cottages on the left and the childrens play area on the right.

(1) About 200m after the play area, turn left through the gate. Follow the path through the parkland towards the Old Castle. (A) Continue on along the shoreline towards the boathouse.

(2) 100m after the boathouse, turn left (South-West) across the White Bridge.

(3) Continue on with the walled garden on your right. Follow the path through the woodlands. The path comes back in a 2.6 Km loop to the White Bridge.

(2) After returning over the white bridge, turn left (West) along a road through the woods. The Estate’s Summer House will be on the left. Continuing through the woods, you will pass a white bungalow on your right and see the estate’s old sawmill and turf house on the left. Then, continue through the woods for around 250 m or so.

(4) Then take the next track on your left (North-East). This will bring you to a concrete lane.

(5) Turn right (South-East) on to the lane and continue on this lane until you reach a crossroads with the main avenue (waypoint (1)). Follow signs for the Visitor Centre to return to the car park. (S/E)

(A) Crom Old Castle : Crom Castle is situated on the shores of the Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and set within a 1,900-acre (7.7 km2) estate. The castle is built of grey stone with the main part of the building and wings being over two floors. The entrance is a battlemented tower with smaller towers to one side. The castle has formal gardens which reach out to the estate and parkland beyond. The ruins of Old Crom Castle can be found within the estate although now only part of the original walls, two towers and a ha-ha remain. There are also two of the oldest yew trees in Ireland inside the Old Castle grounds, believed to be over 800 years old.
