Calomarde Canyon

A beautiful hike along a superb canyon at the entrance to Calomarde. A fairly busy site in a very touristy area.
Please note that when parking in the village of Colomarde, it is best to use the paid car park or find spaces in the village, although these are few and far between. If you do park in the village, please respect the area and its residents by parking correctly where possible.

Description of the walk

Take the road back to the starting point at the Church of San Pedro Apostol.

(S/E) Continue straight ahead on a wide path heading west. You will come to a fork shortly before the end of this path.

(1) Continue up four small steps, then turn left and walk along the slopes of the canyon. This is the PR® TE 002 trail. Then, after a very easy climb, you will reach the highest point of this circuit.

(2) Begin a very easy descent to reach a few houses at the bottom of the valley.

(3) Continue west, then start walking along the left bank of the Rio de la Fuente del Berro. You will reach the ruins of a mill.

(4) Cross the river here to return to the bottom of the canyon. Reach the bottom of the houses you passed earlier.

(5) Here you have two options:
- go left to the crossroads with the ruins and retrace your steps,
- stay in the canyon, which is the route shown on the map, and follow a path that becomes more difficult as the canyon narrows. Continue along this path, which consists mainly of footbridges along the side of the cliffs.
Be careful on this route, which is also used in the opposite direction, requiring some tricky crossings.
After a superb crossing, you will reach the Church of San Pedro Apostol, then the car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) Calomarde is about an hour from Teruel and 20 minutes from Albarracin.
The region is full of beautiful hikes, so there is plenty to do.
(4) It is possible to continue for several kilometres here. You are at the bottom of the valley, where there are lots of trees and it is cool. I imagine that even in summer it remains very pleasant.
Between (5) and (S/E), you will pass through a magnificent area, but you will need to be very careful at crossroads and, above all, help each other out if you are hiking.

Worth a visit

Albaracin. Moscardon, Frias d'Albarracin.
See the Ro Berro waterfall located one kilometre from Calomarde, coming from Albarracin.

It's no longer possible to park in the town, so you have no choice but to use the pay car park. It's a shame that the roadside parking area for hikers isn't suitable for pedestrians. (€3/€24 for cars, €6/€24 for motorhomes. No one answers the phone number if you need help... The car park is poorly maintained but well equipped)
Otherwise, a very pleasant hike with beautiful views. We appreciated having walking sticks.
