Circular on the heights of Cabrières d'Avignon

A lovely circular loop with no particular difficulties in the hills above Cabrières d'Avignon. The end of the walk follows the Plague Wall. Best avoided during periods of high heat as there is little shade.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind the town hall in Cabrières d'Avignon.

(S/E) Go around the town hall on the right, walk along the boules court and take Rue Jean Giono to the right (east). At the roundabout, take Chemin des Pasquiers, on the far left.

(1) At the end of Chemin des Pasquiers, turn right onto Rue Haute, which then becomes Chemin du Colombier.

(2) At the junction with Chemin des Cabanes, turn right onto Chemin des Cèdres (yellow markings). At the "Beauregard" signpost, continue along the road and then, at the junction before the hamlet, turn left onto Chemin de la Grande Combe.

(3) Look out for the start of the botanical trail on the right, marked by a green arrow on a low wooden post, before returning to the wide path a little further on. Turn right and continue to follow the botanical trail marked by green arrows.

(4) At the large crossroads, leave the botanical trail, which is signposted to the left, and continue straight ahead. Stay on the main path. On this section and the next, you will see several ruts in the stone carved out by cart wheels. When you reach a T-junction at Colet des Cabanes, turn left and continue for about 50 metres.

(5) Take the track on the right. Continue climbing until you reach the DFCI de la Pouraque track, which supports the GRP® Massif du Ventoux.

(6) Turn left at the hairpin bend to follow this track, which runs almost parallel to the Mur de la Peste. You can either stay on the DFCI (flat and wide) or take the Mur de la Peste path (more stony and narrow) which branches off to your left and rejoins the DFCI a little further on. The wall is low and in poor condition at the start, but it is increasingly well restored as you follow it. You will reach a star-shaped crossroads at a cistern and an information panel.

(7) Take the path on the left towards Gordes, following the signpost for "la Peithe Est", then immediately right after the Plague Wall signpost. Stay on the Mur de la Peste path, marked in yellow and red, until you reach the information panels about the plague. At the end of the path, you will reach a T-junction with the signpost "Mur de la Peste".

(8) Turn left towards Cabrières d'Avignon: yellow markings. At the crossroads with a stele, continue straight ahead, following the yellow markings, and continue along the Chemin de la Muscadelle to Cabrières.

(9) Take Chemin des Barres on the right, then quickly turn left onto Grand Rue. Walk past the castle and the wash house.

(10) At the fountain, continue right on Grand Rue. At the next fountain, take the street on the left, then another street on the left to reach the town hall and the car park (S/E).

We did this hike as part of a reconnaissance mission. We took alternative routes to avoid the DFCI as much as possible. Path between points 2 and 3 (opposite Chemin des Cedres, which leads to point 3).
At point 4, we chose the path that branches off to the left and climbs back up to the summit.
To descend, between points 6 and 7, we took the country path, which had just been cleared, allowing us to avoid the DFCI. In fact, the author of this beautiful hike probably couldn't have followed this path, which was completely blocked by vegetation.
The beautiful panoramic views on this route and the variations allowed us to better appreciate the route.
I recommend this hike and encourage everyone to see if other variations are still possible...
