Circular route between old wash houses and hamlets, passing through Bagert

A pleasant walk from one old wash house to another, along small roads with lovely views, a short stretch through the forest on a steep but well-maintained path to reach Bagert, and quiet paths through the cow pastures. Suitable for horse riding, accessible on foot; there is a tricky section by bike, but it can be avoided.

Description of the walk

Park near the wash house situated between the hamlets of Mouchet and Le Pouret. Please note there is only space for one or two cars at most.

(S/E) Head north-west along the road downhill through the forest; you’ll soon reach a fork in the road.

(1) Take the path along the ridge to the left. Pass the hamlet of Savaric, then that of Garrabet. A few metres further on, you’ll come to a crossroads with a dirt track.

(2) Turn right onto it, continuing downhill. This track is signposted and forms part of another circular route. Follow this track through the woods for several hundred metres until you reach the Buhobento Stream.

(3) Cross the stream, then continue uphill along this signposted path to the entrance to Bagert.

(4) Turn right onto the path which climbs slightly through the woods; continue on to reach the D335 and follow it to the right as far as the Bagert wash house.

(5) Carry on along this road, first downhill and then uphill, until you reach the junction with a dirt track at the top of the climb.

(6) Turn sharply right onto this track; a few metres further on you’ll come to another junction.

(7) Here you have two options:
- carry on straight ahead along this wide track to reach the Seris crossroads,
- turn slightly left – this is the route shown on the map – and head downhill to reach a rather tricky section.

(8) Please note: on this stretch leading up to the road, the track can be a little bumpy. There are potholes and bumps, but tractors and occasionally cows do use it. Carry on to the crossroads on the road just before the hamlet of La Mourère.

(9) Head up to the right along the road and you’ll reach the hamlet of Séris

(10) Turn slightly left and carry on along this road. You’ll come to a junction with a cross.

(11) Carry on along the road to return to the washhouse car park (S/E).

Notes

(5) Bagert wash house: please note that it is not indicated whether the water is drinkable or not.
(10) After Séris at the highest point: you’ll see a beautiful oak and a chestnut tree. You can also enjoy a lovely view of Mont Valier.
Notes:
- on horseback: plenty of small tarmac roads with little traffic. You’ll regularly find verges where you can pick up a bit of speed.
- On foot: make sure you wear good walking or hiking boots, particularly for the section along the forest track which descends and then climbs again on a slightly stony but very passable path.
You’ll come across a water source on arrival in Bagert. However, it’s not indicated whether the water is drinkable or not. Make sure you bring something to drink.

Worth a visit

Throughout the walk, you’ll find vantage points offering views of the Pyrenees mountain range, including Mont Valier and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre.
A very pleasant stretch through the forest.
Two pretty wash houses, one at (S/E), the other at (5).
