Loop of Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne and Boulogne Castle

This is a lovely route that takes you from the village of Saint-Michel-de-Boulogne to Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne via the fortified castle of Boulogne. The ruins, listed as a Historic Monument, date from the 11th century.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the town hall of Saint-Michel-de-Boulogne.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn left onto the departmental road. Leave it at the bend and take the narrow street opposite, which quickly loses its surface. Enter the undergrowth and continue to a fork in the road in the shape of an inverted Y.

(1) Continue straight ahead towards Fougerolles.

(2) Cross the stream, following the markings, and climb through a chestnut grove to the hamlet of Le Cerisier.

(3) Follow the small tarmac road, passing the entrance to a beautiful property on your left, and continue for about 300 m until you reach a crossroads.

(4) Take the track on the left, which makes two hairpin bends before coming out at a junction with another cross track.

(5) Turn right to follow this track, which runs alongside chestnut trees and makes several bends before joining a small road.

(6) Take it on the left until you reach the entrance to the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Boulogne.

(7) Cross the village, passing in front of the church and the town hall.

(8) Leave the road and take the path on the right, continuing until you reach the crossroads.

(9) Turn right onto the double track path that winds through the forest. Continue to the "Les Mortiers" signpost.

(10) Turn left towards the castle.

(11) At the road, continue straight ahead, then turn left into Impasse du Chemin de Ronde.

(12) Pass under the castle and walk alongside the pretty houses below. Follow the road to the hairpin bend next to the Route de Saint-Michel-de-Boulogne.

(13) Take the path on the left that runs parallel to it. Before reaching the Rantiol buildings, follow the path on the right that leads to the road you have just been following.

(14) Turn left and follow the road carefully until you reach the first crossroads after the bridge over the Rantiol.

(15) Take the track on the right, which climbs until you reach the junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Turn left at the hairpin bend and follow the outward route in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

A pleasant little hike. The castle is private, so you can't go inside. There's a bar-restaurant in Saint Etienne de Boulogne halfway along the route if anyone wants to stop for refreshments or a bite to eat. What we liked least was that the trail was only 1 km long 😓, half of which was dirt track and half tarmac, so I wouldn't recommend it in summer, especially for dogs, as we were baking on the road. No great views, but a beautiful chestnut forest and charming little villages, especially the few houses below the castle. Easy level, no difficulty and, on the plus side, very well marked, I hardly looked at my phone during the hike 😊.
