Circular Pelegrina: gorges and viewpoint of the Gallorío waterfall

This route will take you to a village ranked among the most beautiful in Spain, then down into a gorge where the vegetation will provide shade. You will walk at the foot of the cliffs before climbing to their summits. You will certainly see vultures there, and perhaps a waterfall in spring if there is water.

Description of the walk

You must leave your vehicle in the car park just before the village of Pelegrina.

(S/E) Leave the car park to the west, taking not the road but a path that runs alongside it and leads to the village, joining the tarmac road. Pass the restaurant and reach the crossroads at the entrance to the village.

(1) Turn south and take the street on the left that descends to the bottom of the gorge and walk to the junction with a bridge.

(2) Ignore the bridge (return route) and continue along the same bank towards the east until you reach Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente's cabin.

(3) Continue along the path until you reach a ford.

(4) Cross the Rio Dulce river and take the path on the left, heading east, which climbs up to a junction. This is the eastern end of the circular route.

(5) Leave the path that continues north-east and turn right towards the south, passing a signpost and following the path to the top of the cliff, marked by a post.

(6) Walk along the edge of the cliff without getting too close, as there are no signs or guardrails, until you reach a grove of trees and a ford.

(7) Cross the stream, which becomes the Gollorio waterfall downstream, and head right towards the north-west to the viewpoint overlooking the waterfall.

(8) Continue along the path to a sheepfold.

(9) Turn right onto the path that descends to the bottom of the gorge, take the hairpin bend to the west, ignore a fork to the right and walk to the bridge. Cross the Rio Dulce and return to the junction of the circular route.

(2) Turn left and follow the same path back to the village.

(1) Turn right to reach the car park (S/E).

Between (6) and (9), the trail runs along the top of the cliff: please be careful.

In the nearby area

Vultures frequently fly over the gorge.

The Gollorio waterfall is not always flowing.

The village of Pelegrina is worth visiting and has a tourist office that is open during the season and on weekends.

A few kilometres away, the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente viewpoint offers views of the gorge's distinctive rock formations and, often, vultures.

To the west of Pelegrina, a path leads through the Rio Dulce gorge to the village of La Cabrera, then to Aragosa. This is part of the Camino del Cid.
