Chenonceaux Castle circular - vineyards - banks of the Cher

Ah, Chenonceaux! Without a doubt my favourite château. Exploring the surrounding area is a real pleasure, with vineyards, peaceful villages and the banks of the Cher. Very peaceful, even if there are a few hills, but it's for a good cause: views that are well worth seeing and seeing again. Hybrid or mountain bikes are recommended. Lunch breaks are available in Chenonceaux, Bléré or Saint-Georges-du-Cher.

Description of the route

Departure from the castle car park.

(S/E) Head towards the town centre, cross the railway line, then turn left onto the D40, then quickly right onto Rue de la Roche. Climb up to Rue du Grand Clos on the left.

(1) Take this road and, at the end of the paved road, continue straight on towards the vineyards. Enjoy the panoramic views. At the end of this first path, turn right, uphill, and continue to the next fork.

(2) Turn left, then make a slight first turn left then right and, at the road (Rue Vieilles Cartes), continue to the right. Climb up to the first path on the left, just before a vineyard.Grape varieties: Côt and Cabernet Franc.

(3) Take this path, then turn left at the road, take the small shortcut on the right, and continue to the end of Rue des Caves.

(4) Turn left onto Rue d'Amboise and continue to No. 659. Take the path on the right and continue through the vineyards until you reach a crossroads. Turn left, then quickly take the first path on the right. At the tarmac road, cross Rue de Beauregard and continue straight ahead. Continue along the path until you reach a fork.

(5) Turn left and start going downhill. Turn right at the next intersection, then left.

(6) Turn right after walking along the grove, then left, and you will arrive at the top of Rue des Beigneux.

(7) Descend to Rue Nationale (D40), turn left, then quickly right. Cross the railway level crossing and continue to the end of the tarmac road.

(8) Turn right onto the track and then left at the next fork. Head towards the banks of the Cher, then turn right to follow it as closely as possible on your left until you reach the bridge over the river.

(9) Cross the bridge, take the D376 on the left, then the cycle path, and enter the park. Follow the Cher and stay on the path along the riverbank until... you fall off your bike when you see the Château de Chenonceaux appear!
