Ussé-Bréhémont castle circular via the Indre and then the Loire

Before or after your visit to the Château d'Ussé, which is rumoured to have inspired Charles Perrault's 'Sleeping Beauty', I suggest a lovely circular route along the Indre and then the Loire. There is the option of stopping for a bite to eat in Bréhémont. Remarkable views of the château.

Description of the route

Departure from the Château d'Ussé car park.

(S) Go to the back of the car park, follow the Indre river on your left, and reach a bridge over it.

(1) Cross it, and don't forget to take a look at the church in Rigny-Ussé. Then follow the Indre River on your right along the bucolic path.

(2) At the next bridge (Pont de Grenon), without crossing it, first turn left then right and continue along the river until you reach a road.

(3) Keep to the right, ignore the bridge over the Cher on your right, and continue following the river until you reach a road.

(4) Turn left and you will reach a three-way junction at the entrance to Bréhémont.

(5) Keep right and enter the village (Rue de la Bille Perdue). At the fifth intersection, turn left onto Rue du Pouille, then take Rue de l'Essert on the right and arrive at a three-way junction with a grassy island.

(6) Go left towards the Loire, then turn left onto the D16.

(7) Then gently follow the Loire, taking the D16, which has very little traffic. You will reach a 90° bend to the left.

(8) Stay on the D16, turning left, and enjoy the view facing the castle, which is very photogenic, along this section, and reach its car park (S/E).

Notes

You will walk along a path bordering the Indre river to Bréhémont, then continue on a very quiet road. We ate at La Bréhémontaise, a small, unpretentious eatery with an entirely homemade menu, which gave us the energy we needed to continue. Finally, the road leading to the castle offers some very photogenic views of it. In short, a very pleasant circular route.

(7) If you feel like it, don't hesitate to stop at the bread depot, which serves (or at least did when we were there) simple but homemade meals that are quickly served. We had a very good time there.

Always take something to drink, a puncture repair kit and a camera.
