Circular route starting from Pont de Pany via Roche d'Anse, Urcy and Arcey

In the forest of Velars-sur-Ouche, you’ll reach Mont Aigu amidst moss-covered hills, creating the impression of being in a spectacular world. At the Roche d’Anse viewpoint, a panorama unfolds over the surrounding plains and forested hills. You won’t want to miss taking a photo of the Anse just below. You’ll pass the 15th-century Château de Montculot. The building was unfinished when Lamartine acquired it in 1760. In the village of Urcy, you can have a picnic at the wash house near the church. On Rue Lamartine, a local sculptor exhibits unique works. Through the woods of Combe Roulé and then Combe à la Feuille, you’ll reach Arcey, where the houses have been beautifully renovated. Through the Arcey forest via the Jean Sage Trail, then the Bois de la Chapelle aux Chiens, you’ll arrive at the Burgundy Canal. Return to Pont de Pany by following the canal. If you wish, there is a pub near the station car park.

Description of the walk

Parking available at the Rue de la Gare car park in Pont de Pany.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards the village and immediately join Rue de Bourgogne. Continue to the Canal de Bourgogne.

(1) Turn left onto Rue de la Roche d'Anse, a route marked in pink. At the end of the street, follow the path through the woods, ignoring the one on the right, until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Take the path on the left, which climbs and passes the 477-metre altitude with Mont Aigu on your left. Go round it on the right, heading towards the “Belvédère”. Take care in wet weather, as the valley floor may be waterlogged. You’ll reach a junction.

(3) Turn right and follow the white markings to the right, along the ridge, towards the Roche d’Anse viewpoint, which offers a magnificent view of the surrounding forests and plains.

(4) Please note: continue by following the path down below the viewpoint. There is a steep section leading to the ring. Take care. Walk straight down until you reach the edge of the forest.

(5) Near the edge of the forest, take the path on the left for a few dozen metres, then turn right onto the path that leads into the woods until you reach the field you need to cross to get to the road.

(6) Follow the road to the right and join the D35. Take care, there is traffic.

(7) Walk past the 15th-century Château de Monculot, which once belonged to Lamartine, and continue along this road.

(8) Leave the main road and turn left onto the road leading to the village of Urcy. There is a picnic area with tables at the side of this road.

(9) In the centre of the village, you’ll find the wash house (where you can take shelter), the church, and, as you leave, on the right along Rue Lamartine, the works of a local sculptor are on display outdoors. Follow the D35 to the right for about a hundred metres.

(10) Leave the road and take a path on the left (cross) and follow it through fields and woods.

(11) Take the path on the left running alongside the fence and continue into the forest. Pass Combe Roulée.

(12) Head right towards the D104.

(13) Follow this road to the right and then turn left to reach Arcey (little traffic).

(14) Opposite the town hall, turn left and continue along Rue d'Amont towards Fontaine Sigré.

(15) Before the Fontaine Sigré, turn left onto the path leading into the woods, then, after 50 m, turn right to follow the Sentier Jean Sage, which is circular and arrives at a junction.

(16) At an altitude of 508, turn right onto the signposted route. Descend into the Chapelle aux Chiens valley and join the Canal de Bourgogne.

(17) Go under the bridge and follow the Canal de Bourgogne to the right as far as Pont de Pany.

(1) At the lock, turn right towards the car park on Rue de la Gare (S/E).

A lovely walk with stunning views and geological features.A word of warning, however, for those who aren’t very sure-footed: at the Rocher d’Anse, at level 4, there is a vertical section about 5 metres high, in a rock fissure, which you have to climb down. There are no handholds (cables, chains or ropes) apart from the rock ledges to grip onto, and this is followed by some very steep descents. Well done on this wonderful adventure!

Thank you for your review. It is indeed a bit of a challenge, especially for those who suffer from vertigo. I led a group of 20 people and everything went well.
Thank you

We enjoyed this pleasant, varied and somewhat challenging hike, which gave us the chance to explore an area we hadn’t seen before. We walked to and from the Brise-Cuisses viewpoint. However, please be aware that the descent between the rocks after the viewpoint at level 4 can be tricky for those who are prone to vertigo. Thank you to the author of this hike.
