Blackwater : Tall Trees Arboretum Link

This is an easy walk through woodland, passing through the Arboretum which houses a beautiful collection of trees from many countries. The walk passes Scrag Hill Nursery and ends with a stroll down a short section of the Tall Trees Trail.

Description

This walk starts and ends at Blackwater car park.

(D/A) To start the trail cross over the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and continue up the gravel track. Pass under a second oak archway where the trail through the arboretum begins.

(1) After leaving the arboretum turn right at a cross roads, then shortly right again.

(2) Turn right to join the tall trees trail back to the walk start point.(D/A)

Blackwater car park has space for 50 cars with two spaces reserved for disabled visitors. It has toilets and disabled access toilets, picnic tables, bike racks and an information point.

The route first takes you past open Forest lawns where ponies graze and through Churchplace Inclosure, a timber plantation, before crossing the railway into Ashurst Wood. Then continue along a road that winds pleasantly through ancient pasture woodland and across a grassy lawn to the historic remains of a saltpetre house. Return via a roadside cycle track to Ashurst village.
