A stroll through the heart of the church village of Luleå in Gammelstad

Immerse yourself in history as you wander the narrow streets of Gammelstad, the best-preserved church town in all of Scandinavia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This route invites you to stroll around its15th-century stone church, the focal point around which the streets developed to accommodate more than 400 picturesque wooden cottages, painted in traditional Falun red, to welcome isolated farmers who would converge on these refuges for the weekend to attend the obligatory mass.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on Rutviksvägen, north of Gammelstad.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Rutviksvägen and walk towards the village. Take the second alley on the right, Bagargränd, then, at the end, turn left twice onto the path running parallel to Brantgränd.

(1) Cross the road and continue between the huts opposite. Go round the last hut on the right to follow Rutviksvägen for a few metres, then continue slightly to the left onto Garvargränd. At the end, turn left between the small houses just before Gamla Bodenvägen.

(2) Cross the road and continue left onto Linellgränd. Weave left before the penultimate house before the junction, then turn right twice to return to the same junction via Davidsgränd. Turn left onto Linellgränd then right onto Framlänningsvägen. Continue to the end of the street.

(3) At the edge of the village, turn left onto Jordbrogränd, then right onto Skolgränd. Turn left to pass the large warehouse and go under the archway on the right to reach the medieval church of Nederluleå.

(4) Walk round the church and exit through the gate on the left. Cross the car park and continue to the right onto Gamla Hamngatan. At the end of the village, turn left twice to return to the car park (S/E).
