Several car parks are available at the entrance to the village.
(S/E) Head towards the centre of the village to reach the central square with the church. At the end of the square, on the left, take the small Rue de Valérie which descends and turns into a path. You will arrive at an esplanade with a clear view of the ruined castle.
(1) Descend towards the castle, where you can climb the towers via ladders. Pass the remains of the wall to rejoin the path that descends. Turn right to continue downhill. Observe several ruins: pass in front of the belfry, the king's tomb, the old church and an old residence to reach the Ruisseau d'Audiernes bridge.
(2) There are two options at this bridge, both of which involve a return trip:
- cross the bridge, take the path on the left that climbs up to a rock with a viewpoint.
- Walk up the right bank of the stream to see the old Pont du Parayre bridge.
Alternatively, as indicated by the trail, do not cross the stream, but take the path on the left. Pass in front of a small church. The path becomes a track. Continue for about 100 m until you reach a fork.
(3) Take the path on the right to cross the Ruisseau d'Audiernes stream via the small bridge. Turn left and climb up into the forest, passing a path on your left, until you reach the top of a field at an intersection.
(4) Follow the path to the left along the ridge, then into the forest, turning left at the next intersection to continue downhill. When you reach a field, turn right, cross the small stone bridge and join a road.
(5) Turn right onto this road (GR®). At the hamlet of Prévinquières, turn left onto the road that climbs uphill; at the next intersection, take the road on the right, which turns into a path after the last house. Continue along this path until you reach the ridge.
(6) Leave the GR®. Climb left up the path until you reach the road at the hamlet of Vignié Haut at a crossroads.
(7) Continue straight ahead. At the Calvary intersection, turn left (view of the volcanoes on a clear day). Take the road twice to the left, then straight ahead to another crossroads.
(8) Turn right to reach a multiple road junction and return to the car park (S/E).
and we were afraid of being late because of the approaching rain, but the second half is much faster and easier.
