Description of the walk

Access
From Aubenas, take the N102 towards the Col de la Chavade. At the pass, turn right onto the D239 towards Mazan-l’Abbaye.
From Langogne, take the N88, then the N102 towards the Col de la Chavade. At the pass, turn left onto the D239 towards Mazan-l’Abbaye.
Car park on the left, at the side of the road, before you reach the village of Mazan-l’Abbaye.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards Mazan-l’Abbaye until you reach a junction with a cross on your right.

(1) Turn left and follow the road down towards the ruins of the Old Abbey (GR®) and through the village. Follow the tarmac road uphill to a hairpin bend on the left.

(2) Take the forest track on the right and follow it to a fire break and a junction of tracks and the GR®.

(3) Turn right, following theGR® towards Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne. Follow theGR® markings straight on and reach the three-way junction a few metres after the sharp right-hand bend.

(4) Continue along the path to the left (GR®) and leave the forest track. Begin the descent towards Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne; continue along the path, which winds down a few times before crossing a bridge to reach the village.

(5) Cross the bridge and turn right onto the D160. Follow the tarmac road signpostedGR® until you reach a three-way junction.

(6) Ignore the sign for the Tunnel du Roux and turn right, still following theGR®. Walk a few metres and turn onto the path on the left, past a gate, to reach a meadow. Make sure you close the gate properly. Continue across the meadow and head uphill. Remember to close the gate as you leave the meadow. Carry on along the path until you reach a track at a junction.

(7) Keep to the right and follow the signposts to the next junction.

(8) Ignore the main track branching off to your left and theGR® path branching off to the right, and carry on straight ahead towards the hamlet of Laligier until you reach it.

(9) At the entrance to the hamlet, by the cross, follow the path to the right (GR®) and ignore the roads.

(10) At the tarmac road, turn left and follow it to the junction at the watershed.

(11) Walk a few metres to the right, then take the path on the right, just after the sign for the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park. Head through the woodland; at the three-way junction, go right and you’ll reach a road.

(12) Continue left onto the tarmac road (GR®) and follow it until you reach the start of a path on the left, at the corner where two fields meet on either side of the tarmac road.

(13) Take the path on the left, then cross the road you left behind and continue straight ahead to a ford where horses can drink easily (caution: narrow passage with barbed wire).

(14) Carry on to the hamlet of Fontbonne and join the tarmac road. Turn right here and again at the next junction, then reach a path branching off to the left just after a power line pole.

(15) Take theGR® and cross thefirst tarmac road, then thesecond, and you’ll soon reach thethird.

(16) Continue left (GR®) along the road, ignoring the hamlet of Bèque on the left, until you reach the Mazan State Forest.

(17) Take the forest track on the right (closed to all traffic), heading towards Mazan l’Abbaye. At the next junction, turn right and follow the forest track through the heart of the Mazan State Forest until you reach a three-way junction.

(18) Turn slightly left and continue until you find the start of a path on the left at the entrance to a right-hand bend in the track.

(19) Leave the forest track and take the path that descends to the left (GR®) towards Mazan-l’Abbaye. As you emerge from the woods, enter a pasture by going through a gate. Remember to close it behind you, and do the same when leaving the meadow to return to the village and the tarmac road you took at the start.

(1) Turn left and head for the car park alongside the D239 (S/E).
