In the land of Toine Culot

A lovely circular walk in the land of Toine Culot, the mayor of Trignolles (Treignes). A chance to discover Arthur Masson’s fictionalised version of the Toinade at the Espace Arthur Masson. An international hike… as it ventures about 400 metres into French territory.

Description of the walk

A few parking spaces available in front of the Salle Arthur Masson on the square (dead-end) between Rue Arthur Masson and Rue du Château. Alternatively, at the bottom of the village between Rue du Bucq and Rue de Vaucelles.

(S) Head to the lower part of the village via Rue des Casernes and Rue Arthur Masson.

(1) Head up Rue du Bucq, keeping Rue du Moulin on your right. North-west view of the village centre. A slight bend to the left then to the right before reaching the ridge path (Tienne de Najauge). Cross the ridge path and head back down via a diagonal track through the sheep pasture.
At the next turn: crossing into France. Take the path on the left which enters the Vireux-Molhain Nature Reserve and continue straight on for a few metres before taking the path which descends to the right towards the houses. At the road, turn right to reach the village of Najauge. Return to Belgium.

(2) Don’t miss the path that branches off to the left between two houses. Join the old disused railway line (no longer has rails, unpaved). Take it to the right, cross the Viroin (bridge) and, further on, continue along the road that climbs to the left towards Le Mesnil. Halfway up the slope, look back and admire the hill of Tienne Najauge, which you crossed just a few moments ago.

(3) At the bend in the road, turn left into the woods along a path that climbs straight up (do not follow the edge of the woods but the steep slope to the right).

(4) Join the road and follow it to the left for a few hundred metres.

(5) Turn right onto the well-marked path and follow it. It makes a wide circular downward loop towards Treignes. Join the road to Le Mesnil at the entrance to Treignes. Cross the old railway line (bridge). Walk past the cemetery. Admire the Viroin and the old bridge.

(6) In Treignes, take the first street on the left, heading up towards the church. At the church, take the main street (Rue Eugène Defraire) heading west. Pop into the Espace Arthur Masson museum if you fancy it.

(7) Look out for the small whitewashed chapel a little further up on the right. Take the path on the right which starts just behind the chapel.

(8) Cross the Ruisseau des Fonds de Ri and climb the slope for a few metres. Take the path to the left and continue straight on, through the woods and then across fields until you reach a road.

(9) Take the road to the left. At the bend, ignore the path coming from the right.

(10) At the next bend, ignore the path leading off to the left. Continue straight along the road. It descends towards a campsite. Pass the bend after the campsite and the small wood. The road climbs back up through fields.

(11) Where the road curves to the left, take the path to the right. At the end of the field, walk back and forth along the tree-lined path to see the Fontaine Saint-Hilaire by the stream of the same name. Then continue along the main path.

(12) Climb the hill to the charming site of the Chapelle Saint-Hilaire (listed site). There is a picnic area on the right. Continue along the path to the right and join the ridge path through the woodland.

(13) Follow this path to the left, through the woods at first, opening out onto the fields further on.

(14) Take the country road on the right. On the horizon, above the fields, you can see the plumes of steam rising from the two reactors at the Chooz nuclear power station (France). At the T-junction, continue to the right.

(15) At the crossroads of country lanes, head down towards Mazée and return to the starting point.

A new wooden bridge has been built over the Ri Valley stream, along with a wooden staircase on the slope beyond the stream.

A lovely walk through beautiful countryside. Not too muddy, even at the end of January. We walked it in the opposite direction. Near point 2, we lost the path and took a little shortcut, climbing steeply across the fields of Najauge. It was absolutely lovely. Thank you very much for this walk!

A lovely "walk" (I wouldn't classify it as a hike, or if I did, I'd put it in the "easy" category).
It’s a bit of a shame there are too many concrete paths and that you have to cross roads.
A magnificent site and picnic area in front of Saint Hilaire Chapel (a shame it was closed); the surrounding cemetery is well worth a visit.

The description left me a bit confused on one or two occasions and I got lost during the second part (though I think the poor print quality of the map was to blame, rather than anything else).
The first part of the walk through the woods and hills was exactly what I’d expected and I enjoyed it. No mud, but this follows a long period of ‘drought’ so don’t take my word for it on this point (especially as I saw a few puddles that suggest some tricky sections after a downpour). The paths used are generally well-cleared and you don’t have to battle through the vegetation. Some lovely views and a landscape I didn’t expect to find in the region. It was really nice. The second part through the fields interested me a little less, but I suppose that’s more a matter of taste.
Thanks for the route in any case
