Around Mont Garrot

In the midst of this tide-changing natural environment, Mont Garrot, a true promontory above the river Rance maritime estuary, offers a panoramic view of Saint-Suliac to the north and Anse de Vigneux to the south, where the foundations of an ancient Viking camp emerge at low tide.

Description of the walk

_ Start_: From Moulin de La Chaize, accessed from Saint-Suliac via Rue Dom Allain, Rue Chaize and then the Route du Mont Garrot, about 800 m from the village in the direction of Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine.
There is a small car park with ten spaces on the right at the top of the hill.

(S/E) Cross the Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine and La Ville-és-Nonais roads forming a fork.
Go straight ahead for 50m, then right downhill, where the road forks.

(1) Turn left on the flat part of the road. At the D7 road, turn right towards Le Chablé and pass the farm.

(2) Take the next path on the right, to the Menhir du Chablé, known as "La dent de Gargantua" (Gargantua's tooth). Pass between the houses, then left in front of the hangar.
On the way back, continue along the road to the right, leaving the first access to the crops.

(3) Take the path to the left, then to the right. Join the D7 towards Le Bignon Rangeard. Go straight ahead on the D 407.

(4) At the La Baguais crossroads, granite well on the right and old manor house on the left. Turn right down Rue du Garot. Leave the track under the farm, then turn left at the next fork in the road towards La Rance.

(5) Go straight ahead at the crossroads with Rue des Hurettes. Opposite the Rance and the remains of an ancient Viking camp, turn right around Anse de Vigneux. Now follow the red and yellow markings of the GR® du Pays Malouin.

(6) Fork left as the path veers right towards Mont Gareau.
Follow the raised bank of La Rance. At the point, view south to the Chateaubriand bridge. Cross the various staircases and continue due north along the banks of the Rance. Follow the red and yellow markings to a parking area. Turn slightly left between La Rance and the nautical centre. Continue along the Quai de Rance to the harnour.

(7) Turn right up Rue du Pavé. Turn right into Rue de la Grande Cohue, passing above the church. Continue straight ahead on Rue Chaize, then Route du Mont Garrot.

(8) Turn right onto the dirt track after passing the last house on the right-hand side of the road. At the top of Mont Garrot, turn left at the crossroads to reach the car park (S/E).

Thank you for discovering this superb little walk.
The section after Gargantua's tooth is of little interest, except perhaps for the blackberries in the forest 😉.
Once along the Rance, the scenery is magnificent.
Once we reached Saint Suliac, we pushed on to the Notre Dame observatory to enjoy the view. We finished the outing with 9.5 kms in 3 hours 15 minutes.

I didn't follow the whole route because of the road, I cut through the countryside and discovered the Viking camp and the beautiful scenery along the Rance.

Thanks vince for your comments. Like you I'm not a road ¨fana¨ but it's often difficult to map out a loop hike with a few kilometres without a passage through tarmac and the traffic that goes with it.
I've also posted a 2.6 km roadless hike called Massif du Mont Garrot.
As for the Viking camp, another hypothesis is that it was once an oyster farm.
Happy hiking!

As far as I'm concerned, I didn't really enjoy the first part: you walk along the main road on a narrow strip of grass bordered by a ditch, then along farms (it's less unpleasant than the 1st main road, but the interest remains limited) until you reach the Rance, towards the Viking camp. For me, the interesting walk starts here. The scenery is nice, the gradient is sometimes "significant" (the big steps may be a little more difficult for children and people who walk less well, but with poles, I'm sure the difficulty will be much less!) and I love it! Although I was nearly knocked over by a mountain biker in the undergrowth that leads to Saint Suliac (as far as I know, this is not a path for bikes), this marked section along the coast is charming. Finally, the finish at Saint Suliac is simply magnificent! I lingered there for a while, taking several detours!

The starting point is wrong: It is not on the N7.
But to find "Le Moulin de la chaise" you have to leave St Suliac via "La route du mont Garrot".
Point 2 is on the N7

A good, easy route for an afternoon stroll to a pretty viewpoint. The return through the narrow streets of Saint Suliac is pleasant.

A very nice easy to moderately difficult walk, with lots of short ascents and descents along the Rance. Beautiful views over the Rance and St Suliac.

A short, easy hike. A nice view of the old Viking camp near the "top" of Mont Garrot. We didn't follow the route on the map exactly, but it was impossible to get lost.

Very nice walk with lovely views over the Rance. Thanks for the suggestion. A little problem with the description in (1): we looked in vain for the "flat part of the path" where we were supposed to turn left. So, when we saw the road we weren't supposed to reach, we turned back to discover a little path hidden in the bushes, which we thought was on a downhill part of the path.

We chose to start this walk from the nautical base, so that we could start with the climb and the road section. It's a very good alternative that allows us to finish along the Rance, which is the most beautiful part.
