Description of the walk

Arriving in Meyrueis from the south on the D986, take the signposted parking lot at the entrance to the village, crossing a small bridge and following a short street that leads to the Place du Champ de Mars, where the parking lot is located.

Red and White GR® markings and Yellow markings

(S/E) Head south of the square to the Place du Champ de Mars hiking sign, and follow the signs for the Monument aux Morts on the right. Immediately turn right into Rue du Commandeur, then left to reach a bridge over the Bethuzon, and cross the river to reach the Quai de la Barrière at the Monument aux Morts marker.

(1) Go left a few dozen meters to discover this part of the village then walk back to the Monument aux Morts marker.

(1) Follow signs for Chapelle Notre-Dame du Rocher, crossing the quay and turning left into Rue du Rocher. At the end of Rue du Rocher, continue along the path in the same direction. Reach a small road at the Chemin de la Vinade signpost. Cross the road and continue along the path opposite. You'll come to another road (D39) which you should follow straight ahead until you see the Rocher du Château sign.

Without markings

Turn right, leaving the signposts, to reach the site of Chapelle Notre-Dame du Rocher.

(2) Panorama over the village and surrounding area. Turn left towards the small building on the north side of the esplanade, with a commemorative panel about Édouard-Alfred Martel. Take the path to the left of the building, then make a right-hand hairpin turn to pass under the esplanade. Follow this path, sometimes equipped with steps, down to the village with some steep sections. It is dotted with information panels. Further down, it crosses terraces and ends with some steps to reach an alley. Follow it to the left, arriving at the Place du Planet and continuing to the left (Rue du Château). At the end of the street, stairs takesyou down to Rue de l'Horloge and a small square with a fountain.

(3) For a return trip, go left to the bridge over the Jonte (note the renovated horse shoeing apparatus). Retrace your steps to the small square.

(3) Continue straight on, passing the Tour de l'Horloge, go straight on, cross the bridge over the Bethuzon and go as far as the bridge over the Jonte which offers a fine view of the Jonte, the tower and the Rocher with the chapel. Retrace your steps, cross the Bethuzon again and turn left onto Place Sully (tourist office). Walk some 50 meters a bridge over the Bethuzon.

(4) For a very short round trip, turn right into an alleyway under an arch, and discover some old passageways. Return to the Place Sully.

(4) Take the bridge opposite, a little to the left, then follow Rue du Temple to the left. Continue to the temple, built on an octagonal plan.

(5) Retrace your steps for about 60 meters and climb the stairs to the left, which lead to the Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul. Turn right onto Rue Saint-Pierre. At the intersection, turn left (Rue Saint-Blaise), then left again, passing under an arch. Take the second street on the right and you'll be back at Place du Champ de Mars (S/E).
