Start & Parking: Coach and Horses, Bolton by Bowland (BB7 4NW) Grid ref. SD 785 493
(S/E) Leaving the Inn, walk across the small bridge and up the road passing the parish church on your left.
(1) Then take the private drive on your right (South), marked King Henry Mews. Continue down this private drive, which is fenced on both sides and through an avenue of trees. Pass over a low stone bridge, with Yew trees on either side, and continue up the drive, noting the large dramatic stone outcrop on your right, at which point on a clear day you should be able to view Pendle Hill in front of you. Continue down the hill along the same drive, passing over the stile beside the cattle grid.
(2) Then fork left following the track with the wall on your right. Passing some cottages on your right, continue, bearing left, and before the last cottage, follow the track left, which begins with cobble sets and then continues as a rough track.
Reaching the converted barn, take the kissing gate on your left then follow in the direction the footpath sign points, across the field to the next kissing gate. Continue across the next field to a footbridge located just to the right of a small concrete shed.
(3) Crossing the footbridge, continue straight on towards a stumpy tree, keeping the fence on your left until you reach the next stile. Crossing this, follow the path straight on, through a small fenced-off plantation of young trees. The path rises towards the end of the plantation and at this point, you may be able to hear the sound of the River Ribble deep in the gorge to your right.
(4) Go through the next kissing gate and follow the path along the edge of the field until you reach another kissing gate, as you head towards Food Farm (keeping the hedge on your right). Just as you approach the first cottage take the kissing gate on your right, walk around the barn and left to the next kissing gate. Taking care down the steps, continue left up the track, through the farm and to the green gate between the sheds.
Go through this gate and bear right across to the kissing gate into the next field and then again to another kissing gate. Continue into the larger field and, keeping the fence on your right, walk to the top right-hand corner of the field at the top of the hill.
(5) Continue through the kissing gate, and straight down the hill bearing slightly left to the next kissing gate. After this, continue down the hill, following the line of what appears to be an old ditch, also passing a line of old oak trees, to the final kissing gate at the road (Gisburn Road).
At the road, head left down the hill into the village, taking care as you walk along the roadside. You will pass the village graveyard on your right (Waypoint (1)), then the school and the village green. You will soon rejoin the route where you started earlier, with the Coach and Horses Inn on your left - the perfect place to stop awhile for a drink or a hearty meal after your walk! (S/E)
