Description of the walk

Start: The Spread Eagle Inn, Sawley, Near Clitheroe, Lancs, (BB7 4NH). Grid ref. SD 776 465

(S/E) From the Spread Eagle Inn car park, walk downstream and across the bridge, then left over the stile and along the riverside footpath to a road and left uphill for 200 yards to take a footpath on the right opposite a farm.

(1) Follow the path through the gate as it climbs to the old well then veer slightly left across the field to cross a stile and join the farm track.

(2) At the farm, continue left between buildings, past the lawnmower shop, and over a double stile onto pastureland. Head to the top right corner of the field and cross the stile, continuing through the middle of three gates in front of you to climb along the rough track along the field boundary then across the field to the little copse above Far Lathe. Go right over the stile and continue under the trees and then fields to a farm track.

(3) Go left along the track, through the farm buildings then right (North) onto the road. Climb for 300m and at the fork continue straight ahead (left). Follow this quiet lane round to the left.

(4) After 500m take the footpath on the right that skirts the plantation. After another 500m, over the crest of the hill, turn right onto Shivering Ginnel and continue alongside the plantation then over fields. The trig point is a short detour south off the path from which the views are magnificent (A). From the summit trig point, continue to the road.

(5) Turn right (South) and head downhill 290 m to Scriddles Farm, taking the footpath on the left opposite the farm. Follow the field boundary to a stile in the left-hand corner of the field – be careful on the steep steps on the other side, then head left, continuing to Till House.

(6) Follow the lane downhill across the cattle grid and follow the footpath markers through the back garden of the cottage over the stile and into the field beyond.

(7) Continue descending through a series of fields and over a footbridge followed by a stile on the left into a meadow. Head uphill across a meadow and at the crest of the brow go left through a gate then follow the fence along the edge of the copse and over the stile, following the field boundary to another stile into the woods.

(8) Follow the path along the lip of the wooded ghyll and through the gate then past the garage and onto the lane. Continue along the lane.

(9) Turn left onto the road then back across the bridge to the Spread Eagle. (S/E)
